Single leaf (approximately 110 × 170 mm), written in ink on laid paper. The surviving leaf is the illustrated page only, the remainder of the letter having been removed by a previous collector; old mounting dominates the verso. The recto displays a pen-and-ink sketch by Furniss of a woman's profile, begun and then deliberately cancelled with emphatic strokes, accompanied by the manuscript caption 'I'll imagine - no I can't!' Signed by Furniss at foot. An example of Furniss's informal letter-drawings, self-conscious and humorous in intent, preserved by a previous owner for the original sketch and autograph rather than the text. Furniss (1854-1925) was a British illustrator and political cartoonist, closely associated with Punch and with the illustration of Lewis Carroll?s Sylvie and Bruno. Signed by Author(s).

Autograph card signed to an official connected to the Royal Academy, with original pen-and-ink self-caricature. London, 23 St Edmund's Terrace, Regent's Park, [c. 1880s-1890s]. Card, 90 × 140 mm. Autograph manuscript note in ink to recto; pen-and-ink drawing to verso. Two stickers or remnants of attached to the left hand side of the card, some minor edge wear otherwise very good. Autograph note from Harry Furniss to an offical connected to the Royal Academy, apologising for a delay in replying owing to being occupied but that he will be at the Royal Academy during the week, and thanking him for a suggestion. The verso bears an original self-caricature by Furniss, showing himself top-hatted and intent, captioned 'I have my eye on it', and referring to 'Lot 1864'. The drawing appears to allude directly to the recipient's suggested work, visualising Furniss as a prospective purchaser scrutinising a particular catalogue lot. Anglo-Irish journalist and caricaturist (1854-1925), best known for his work for Punch. Three pages, 12mo. Very good, but with slight wear and discoloration to recto of first leaf of bifoliate. Asks to 'know the fate of Miss Lyster's M.S.' 'You will recollect I called & saw you about it some months ago. She is anxious you should understand you can have the M.S. without the drawings as you did not seem for the latter | An answer will much oblige | Yours very truly | [signed] Harry Furniss'. Suggests that his correspondent may wish to 'write direct to Miss Lyster | Rocksavage | Blackrock | Co Dublin'. The subject of the letter is presumably Annette M. Lyster, a voluminous author of children's books of a religious nature.
