Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression with full number line. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, top corners very slightly rubbed, not price clipped (£16.99), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 291pp. The book begins in November 1990 in Bogota, Columbia, when a group of gunmen ambush a car, kill the chauffeur and kidnap its two women passengers. The gunmen were working for Pablo Escobar, boss of the Medellin course cocaine cartel, who in the early nineties kidnapped the relatives of a number of Colombia politicians in order to pressurise the government to suspend the policy of extraditing drug traffickers to the USA. 'News of a Kidnapping' is at once a powerful, disturbing account of how Escobar undermined all Colombia's civil institutions by murder or bribery, and a moving exploration of the fate of Esobar's hostages, who were mostly middle aged or elderly women.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition. Translated from the Spanish by Edith Grossman. ***Near fine in forest-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Boards clean and unmarked. No bumps. Corners sharp. Internally near fine with just a neat ownership name and date on the front free endpaper. No foxing. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £13.99 net. The spine of the dustwrapper is very slightly faded, and there is a production laminate crease to the front panel. No chips. No tears. ***285 pages. 210 mm x 145 mm. ***'In his new novel, Gabriel García Márquez transmutes historical truth into magical narrative as he recounts the tempestuous life of the great Simon Bolivar: known as the Liberator, the dreamer fired by his vision of a South America splendidly united, the dazzling orchestrator of political and military intrigue, the lover, the libertine, the fighter - the quintessential, devastatingly romantic nineteenth-century hero. García Márquez gives us not the icon but the man - flesh and blood, complex, contradictory, worthy of both adoration and anger - seen among his enemies and partisans. And as Bolivar re-examines his life in the fierce light of death's imminence, history rushes in and the reader is immersed in the momentous decades-long adventure that Bolivar set in motion and that ultimately changed the destiny of a continent.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***First impression of the first UK edition, in near fine condition. Of interest to collectors of Gabriel García Márquez and Latin American literature. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
