Gastaldi, come sottolineato nel titolo dell'opera, fu nominato da Alessandro VII commissario generale degli ospedali e in seguito commissario di salute pubblica. Importante e corposo lavoro sulla peste che riporta, oltre allo specifico commentario medico, 245 decreti sanitari relativi ai casi di epidemia degli anni precedenti la pubblicazione; fondamentali le misure di prevenzione sanitarie (quarantena) e architettoniche presentate e applicate nella città di Roma. Una piccola macchia d'umidità interessa le prime carte in esemplare altrimenti fresco e marginoso.
