Full Buckram Cloth binding, illustrated with a portrait of the Author and numerous engravings on wood from drawings by William M'Connell. George Augustus Henry Fairfield Sala (18281895) was an author and journalist who wrote extensively for the Illustrated London News as G. A. S. and was most famous for his articles and leaders for The Daily Telegraph. He founded his own periodical, Sala's Journal, and the Savage Club. The former was unsuccessful but the latter still continues. xii, 392pp. Approximately 8 ½ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine fair condition gilt titles, worn top and tail with some loss, discolouration. Joints good condition rubbed and worn. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition red buckram cloth with blind stamped detailed border to the front and rear, the front board has a dark mark across the bottom left hand corner. Page edges good condition top edge slightly darkened, the fore edge has some pages standing proud, all tanned. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition intact. Paste downs good condition plain, lightly tanned. End papers good condition plain, lightly tanned, there is an illustration stuck to one of the free end papers (reverse of the frontispiece). Title good condition lightly tanned. Pages good condition b/w portrait frontispiece of the Author, numerous further illustrations throughout, lightly tanned with very minor foxing in places, gutter strained between pages 248/9 and 264/5.
