Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. 2nd Revised and Enlarged Edition. 268 pages. In this new and enlarged edition of his popular book, the author has added not only a number of new entries but also new information to existing entries. Nearly 3,600 counties, cities, mountains, and lakes are listed alphabetically, with such information as origin of name, date of founding and abandonment of towns, existence of a post office, changes of name, and other pertinent details. The story of its place names shows the entire panorama of Oklahoma history. The state has occupied a peculiar position as the converging point of many and varied civilizations, and its names are a reflection of the romance of its racial and pioneering past. The music of Spanish and the guttural of Indian tongues are to be found in close juxtaposition in the names of geographical features. French, English, and even Bohemian names produce a medley of nomenclature probably unequaled anywhere else in the University States. The author has drawn his materials from information supplied by historical archives, government records, and the recollections of private individuals, in addition to making use of Charles Gould's pioneering work on the subject, published by the University of Oklahoma Press in 1933 and long out of print. George H. Shirk, prominent attorney and former mayor of Oklahoma City, was president of the Oklahoma Historical Society. A well-known authority on Oklahoma history, he was the author of many articles published in The Chronicles of Oklahoma, the quarterly journal of the Society. Historian Muriel H. Wright, longtime editor of Chronicles of Oklahoma, has been recognized for her distinguished career by the University of Oklahoma and by other public and civic organizations.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good minus. First edition. This issue lacks the back cover. A single complete original issue with front cover and ads. Quarto, 9 3/4" tall, illustrated wraps, approx. 160 pages + ads. An otherwise very good, clean, sturdy issue of this key literary magazine of its age, with minor shelf wear, rubbing and chipping at the spine corners. BUT, the primary defect is that the back cover is missing--covers were issued oversized to the interior stock and thus the edges appear roughed, but this is true of all copies for the same reason; interior binding tight, paper lightly yellowed.

Hamilton Wright Mabie (1846-1916) was an influential American essayist, critic, and editor whose work shaped children's literature and general readership at the turn of the 20th century. A longtime associate editor of The Christian Union (later The Outlook), Mabie became known for his polished literary style and for championing accessible, morally uplifting literature. He edited numerous anthologies, including The Young Folks' Treasury, and wrote widely on culture, nature, and reading. Mabie was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters and was admired for bringing literary appreciation to a broad American audience. George Cary Eggleston (1839-1911) was an American author, editor, and journalist best known for his historical writings, memoirs, and works for young readers. A Confederate veteran, he wrote the widely read A Rebel's Recollections as well as a number of boys' adventure stories and historical biographies designed to promote good character and civic understanding. Eggleston served as editor of Hearth and Home and contributed to major periodicals throughout his career. His editorial work on The Young Folks' Treasury reflects his lifelong interest in making history engaging and accessible to young audiences.
