First Edition
Scarce first edition of this conservation classic by the father of American environmentalism. "Man and Nature was arguably the most influential work of its time. It was the first book to recognize the environmental perils of human agency, the first to assess the damage done, and the first to set forth a program of reform" (Lowenthal, p. 227). Marsh (1801-1882) became interested in the environment through his role as Railroad Commissioner for Vermont, which entailed an investigation into fish habitats. He was disturbed by the deterioration in population and quality that the study exposed, which he attributed to overfishing, industrialization, and, in particular, deforestation. Marsh was later appointed the first US minister to Italy, where he witnessed Alpine erosion caused by grazing and deforestation. This convinced him that trees were nature's most important stabilizing element and that forestry was the best hope for restoring the destruction caused by man. The work was initially rejected by John Murray for being too radical, and its eventual publisher, Scribner, opposed its first, more aggressive title, Man the Disturber of Nature's Harmonies. The book was controversial even under the present title; its infamy quickly necessitated a second edition. The work influenced legislation around the world, including in France, India, and New Zealand; it particularly inspired the US Forest Reserve Act (1891) and the Italian parliamentary debate for the Majorana Calatabiano Law on forests (1877). David Lowenthal, "Marsh's Man and Nature at 150", George Wright Forum, vol. 32, no. 3, 2015. Octavo. Original dark brown wave-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, covers panelled concentrically in blind, yellow endpapers. Contemporary ownership signature of Helen M. Rockwood (1819-1890) to front free endpaper, first blank, title page, p. iii, and rear pastedown, the first three dated 1865. Spine and corners expertly restored, cloth fresh and unfaded, creasing and light foxing to endpapers, occasional thumb marks to contents, neat pencil notes demonstrating close reading of the text to approximately first 50 pp., but generally clean, a handful of short closed tears to bottom edges of gathering 8: a very good copy in the original cloth.

Man the disturber of nature's harmonies". cfr. Treccani e wiki).

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In "Man and Nature", first published in 1864, polymath scholar and diplomat George Perkins Marsh challenged the general belief that human impact on nature was generally benign or negligible and charged that ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean had brought about their own collapse by their abuse of the environment. By deforesting their hillsides and eroding their soils, they had destroyed the natural fertility that sustained their well-being. Marsh offered his compatriots in the United States a stern warning that the young American republic might repeat these errors of the ancient world if it failed to end its own destructive waste of natural resources. Marsh's ominous warnings inspired conservation and reform. In linking culture with nature, science with history, "Man and Nature" was the most influential text of its time next to Darwin's "On the Origin of Species", published just five years earlier. Challenges the general belief that human impact on nature was generally benign or negligible and charged that ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean had brought about their own collapse by their abuse of the environment.
