Book Description: Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT, 1982. PB. Book Condition: very good+, wraps (softcover). 125 B&W ill, 8 color plates (illustrator). 198pp ISBN 0894670166 This extraordinary study of the regional characteristics of a single furniture form is a gratifying example of scientific methodology harnessed to serve the arts. Published to accompany an exhibition of the same name at the Yale University Art Gallery, the book is largely based on Benjamin A. Hewitt's ten-year computer study of the form, ornament, and construction of nearly 400 federal period card tables from three broad geographic areas and nine urban centers in the Eastern United States. The study is given breadth and texture by Gerald Ward's essay on early American card-playing and by Patricia Kane's chapter on the role of design and price books in standardizing card table manufacture; but the heart of the presentation is Hewitt's comprehensive statistical analysis. (from a book review in ART & ANTIQUES, July-August 1982). An uncommon and essential furniture reference. Bookseller Inventory # 024047

Book Description: Peter Randall Pub, Portsmouth, NH, 2007. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. #30 of 500 copies. Brand new hardcover with dustjacket, gift quality. Book measures approx. 11x8.5 inches. 124 pages clean & tight. Fresh unsigned bookplate affixed inside front cover reads #39/500 (number 30 of 500 copies). First edition. Autographed by author in ink on half title page: F. Shirley Prouty. 123+ pages including index. Unread.Gift quality. "When F. Shirley Prouty was growing up, her family told stories of a great-great, German "Uncle" with a shock of white hair, and an incredible talent for woodcarving. His name was Johannes (John) Kirchmayer, the gifted ecclesiastical carver. As part of a legacy she wished to establish, Ms Prouty painstakingly gathered information on his vast body of work and created a list of his carvings. That "list" has grown into a catalog, biography and a history of the works of Kirchmayer. Ms Prouty has located over sixty different sites that display his work. Forty of the sites are churches, mostly Episcopalian, but including Catholic, Congregational, Presbyterian and Unitarian Universalist. There are also ten schools, three museums, a library, a bridge and many models pictured. The models include plasterwork, which Kirchmayer learned as a potter in his homeland of Oberammergau, wax modeling, stone carving and ivory carving, with which he was always experimenting. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Florence Shirley (Powell) Prouty grew up and graduated from high school in Arlington, Massachusetts. She attended Westbrook Junior College in Portland, Maine, finishing two years in one. Soon after, she married Ernest L. Prouty, and they have now been married for fifty-six years. They moved to Cape Cod, where they raised their family. She is an accomplished seamstress and a quilter, who enjoys crocheting and knitting. Mrs. Prouty is a past adult advisor with the IORG, a fraternal organization for girls between the ages of eleven and twenty-one. Shirley and Ernest are retired and keep busy sharing hobbies of cooking, sewing and tracking four paternal lines of genealogy. This book is but aspect of the treasures in their respective families backgrounds." From the internet. Bookseller Inventory # 51689
