This is a biography of Legh Richmond (1772-1827), a Church of England clergyman and writer. He is noted for tracts, narratives of conversion that innovated in the relation of stories of the poor and female subjects, and which were subsequently much imitated. He was also known for an influential collection of letters to his children, powerfully stating an evangelical attitude to childhood. The book is bound in contemporary brown full leather boards with gold titling and designs and five raised bands on the spine. There is an embossed design and gold lining on both boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with some expected scuffing and light soiling to the leather on the boards There is rubbing to the leather on the corner tips and spine corners and bands on the spine. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and light foxing on the endpapers. The frontispiece is more heavily foxed and has a water stain around the top corner and bottom edge. The second front free endpaper is soiled and also has an old inscription. The rear free endpaper is missing.

Harding (one of which was drawn "on the spot") for a total of sixteen different illustrations (two per volume), handsomely marbled endpapers with variety of distinct colors, and gold (most of which is bright) exterior ends of pages; worst condition volume is volume one: some age spots, but most of the volume is free of them, first blank forepage cut out, a 1" x 2" moderate stain along bottom edge beginning at second blank forepage and extending for two pages and affecting bottom of blank areas of two illustrations, exterior leather is rubbed at edges and covers have surface scrapes in several places w/ some scraped areas darkened, corners worn (one extending past corner), and severe rubbing top and bottom of spine; five raised lines (ribs) on spine each of which is about 1" apart and interspaced between ornately engraved designs and title area; two gold lines run along edges of front and back covers with line of tooled indentations within innermost gold line; gold fleur de lis inside each of the eight corners and small round gold design at each of the eight corners, many gold-stamped ornate designs (which are, for the most part, bright and distinct) along the leather edge which runs alongside pastedown endpaper inside front and rear boards; worst condition volume is in far worse condition than most of the other volumes; overall a very attractive set containing many poems and many letters. William Cowper (1731-1800), 1st Earl, Viscount Fordwich, was an English poet who wrote about the simple pleasures of country life and expressed a deep concern with human cruelty and suffering.
