Pages are moderately tanned with notable foxing to endpapers and text block edges. Pencil inscription to front paste-down, with a few small nicks and rubbing along text block edge. Mild cracking to gutters with exposed netting. Binding remains firm. Occasional thumb-marking present throughout. Boards have light shelf-wear with mild corner bumping and slight crushing to spine ends. Moderate tanning and mottling to spine.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. In a dark blue leather hardcover with 7 raised bands, gilt titles on a red background and gilt decoration to spine, gilt tooling to boards. No dust jacket. Marbled end papers. 416 pp., marble edged with black and white "portrait, two maps, and thirty illustrations after sketches by General Gordon". The book is in good condition with quite heavy shelf-wear to the extremities of the cover, with the front board having a 1.5" split to the head of the spine. There is minor scuffing to the boards. There is a prize label to the front paste down. There is quite heavy foxing to the reverse of the ffep, fly leaf and half title, also to the last page of the index, reverse of the end map, end fly leaf and reverse of the efep. There are a few spots to the frontispiece and title page, slight deckling to the pages which are otherwise clean and unmarked. The end map has a 6" tear and creased edge.
