Das Licht ist gedämpft und auf der Bühne tummeln sich seltsame Gestalten in einem fantastischen Theatrum mundi. Zum Ensemble gehören menschliche und animalische Geschöpfe sowie als besondere Attraktion einige Freaks und Mutanten. Sie geben ihre Anomalien preis und agieren miteinander in rätselhaften Situationen. Groteske Schaubilder, deren Sinn verborgen bleibt. Ihr Auftritt ist bestens illuminiert. Kostüme und Ausstattung sind von ausgesuchtem Stil und eleganter Farbigkeit. Schaurig schön das Ganze. Das Programm ist abwechslungsreich: Wir sehen ein Balalaika spielendes Schwein, eine nackte Frau trommelt mit zwei Knochen auf einem Totenschädel, ein blässlicher Junge leckt die Sohle eines offenbar nicht zu ihm gehörenden Fußes, zwei exotische Vögel bedrängen ein gerupftes Hähnchen mit männlichem Kopf, ein nackter bärtiger Mann ist in die Betrachtung einer Scheibe Wurst mit Smiley-Gesicht vertieft, ein mäuseartiges Wesen mit spanischer Halskrause und purpurnem Umhang hütet zusammen mit ein paar Ziegen eine Herde auf dem Boden liegender, stereotyp grinsender und finster drein-blickender Gesichter-Kugeln. Dazwischen immer wieder Stillleben, in denen Milch und Fleisch beziehungsweise Wurst und Fliegen eine dominierende Rolle spielen. Die beim Publikum ausgelöste Stimmung schwankt zwischen Belustigung und Verwunderung. Auch wenn wir uns das alles nicht recht erklären können, sind wir empfänglich für diese Kabinettstückchen, weil sich ihre Darbietung auf vertraute Referenzen stützt, die einen assoziationsreichen Bogen von Fabeln und Märchen über Sience Fiction bis hin zur Kunstgeschichte schlagen. [.] Viele der Bildtitel, die den merkwürdigen Kreaturen und ominösen Szenen beigegeben sind, imitieren den Ton überlieferter Spruchweisheiten und bedeutungsvoller Aphorismen. Sie erinnern an Filmtitel, Wortspiele, Alltagsslogans, Kalauer und erklären natürlich nichts. Wie selbstverständlich kommentieren sie lediglich das Geschehen. Manchmal legen die Titel falsche Fährten aus oder verschleiern das, was wir zu sehen glauben. Im Zusammenklang mit den Bildern ergeben sich emblema-tisch wirkende Schaustücke, in denen Sinn aber nur simuliert wird. Denn es geht dem jungen Maler (noch) nicht um letzte Wahrheiten. Paul Pretzer hat einfach große Freude am Bildermachen. Vielleicht entspringt diese Lust auch dem Bewusstsein von der Flüchtigkeit des Mediums an sich, dessen einzige Konstante die unablässige Produktion neuer Bilder ist. Was immer er braucht, entnimmt er dem universalen Bildbestand unserer Zeit. Der Autorität und Bedeutung des angeeigneten Materials begegnet er mit ironischer Subversion.
