Item Description: Philip Lieson Miller and Others Various Dates, New York. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First edition. The personal scrapbook of Philip Lieson Miller (1906-1996), the renowned New York Library Chief of the Music Division from 1959-1966, vocalist, commentator, concert arranger, and author, and an important presence on the New York cultural scene. Miller worked at the Library from 1927-1966 during which time he associated with many notable persons, particularly in the music business. His personal scrapbook contains letters, notes, postcards, broadsides, programs and other materials spanning his life, a veritable trove of material from musicians, composers, conductors, opera singers, and others active in the music world as well as material from acquaintances and friendships related to his father’s Roxbury Hotel located in the Catskills. The items are from both literary and musical persons. Miller's copious assemblage of items reflects his rich life and distinct presence on the New York cultural scene as he not only ran the Library's Music Division but also worked as a vocalist, a ubiquitous commentator, and an energetic concert arranger, all while authoring several books. His accomplishments at the Library include building the library’s repository of recordings into the second largest in the world behind only that of The Library of Congress; supervising the enormous move of collections from Fifth Avenue to Lincoln Center; and contributing to the development of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives and Toscanini Memorial Archives. The New York Times noted in his obituary that "he was nearly as much of an institution as the library itself". This rather thick scrapbook (measuring approximately 4 inches thick at its thickest point) is in Very Good condition, shows some handling soil to the boards, and contains over 60 9" x 12" leaves onto which Miller affixed his many collected items by mounting corners. Most of the scrapbook's pages host such materials and an additional 250 or more pieces pieces are loosely laid in, yielding altogether over 400 signed items. The items mounted or loosely laid in include handwritten and typewritten letters, notes, postcards, business cards, booklets, programs, Christmas cards, canceled checks, and an abundance of library book request slips with signatures. Contents range in quality from Good to Near Fine condition with most items being in Very Good + condition. The mounted materials are potentially removable, but they release with difficulty (if at all) from the mounting corners which typically are firmly attached to the scrapbook's pages and, in most cases are sticking to the items themselves -- thus we do not advise removal. Most of the signatures are from persons in the music world and other notable items are from authors, politicians, heads of music institutions, and writers including John Burroughs (a one page autograph signed letter about his son, John, and a planned visit by Burroughs to Miller), signed post cards from Clara Barrus -- physician, author, and friend and biographer of, and fellow traveler with, John Burroughs -- and Marianne Moore (Autograph Card Signed), noted sportswriter Grantland Rice for whom ESPN's Bill Simmons' popular cultural website is named, and other notable persons. While we have not identified all of the signatures on the library book request slips, we note that Miller believed them to be worthy of his collection. Items include, but are not limited to, ones from the following persons: Charles Hughes – Secretary of State; Walter Chaudler – Congressman; Frederick Davenport -- New York Senator; James Wadsworth – US Senator; Poultney Bigelow – Author/ Journalist - 9 Signed items; Channing Pollock – Writer; Erich Leinsdorf – Boston Symphony Director; Frank Dempster Sherman – Poet; John Burroughs – Writer, essayist – Autograph Letter on stationery- fastened at the corners and in Very Good condition; Ernest Thompson Seton – Author/ Artist; Edward Johnson – Inventor and Associate of Thomas Edison; T. Tertius Noble – Composer; Grantland Rice – Sports writer; Arthur Billings Hun. Bookseller Inventory # 00003996
