Considered to be America's first stand-up comedian, Charles Farrar Brown's creation Artemus Ward, a barely literatre circus manage loosely based off P.T. Barnum, was hugely popular in both America and England, considered to the favourite author of Abraham Lincoln. In this particular work, Ward takes us to California, Salt Lake City, and Richmond. In the publisher's original brown cloth. Externally, the odd handling mark, and slight fading to the spine. Minor rubbing to joints, and bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, with a small lift to cloth to top extremity. Brown end papers are clean. Tipped in publisher's advertisement to front pastedown.
