Limited edition, one of 300 handsomely produced copies of Logue's unfinished modernist re-imagining of the Iliad, dedicated to his friend Sir Paul Getty. Though Logue insisted his was an "account" rather than a translation, Donald Carne-Ross called it "the ultimate example of translation which 'risks everything in its effort towards the greatest possible recreation of the original'" (Power). "Logue's Homer, as it became known, began life [in 1959] as another Third Programme commission for Carne-Ross, who provided literal cribs from which Logue departed freely. He never learned Greek but aimed at an original English poem informed by the imagistic techniques learned from Eliot and Pound, and his own experiments with cinematic montage" (ODNB). The first publication in the series, containing Books 16-19, was published in a volume also titled War Music (1984). Continually expanded to include further books from the Iliad, the War Music project concluded with the fifth instalment, Cold Calls (2005), due to Logue's death in 2011. Jeffrey Brown, "'War Music', by Christopher Logue", 26 February 2016; Henry Power, "Christopher Logue, Alexander Pope, and the Making of War Music", The Review of English Studies, vol. 69, no. 291, September 2018. Small folio. Original dark red cloth, spine lettered in silver, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Housed in the publisher's matching cloth slipcase. Title page printed in red and black. Hand-painted red initial opening each section. Produced on handmade paper. A fine copy in the very good slipcase with a couple of white marks.
