Sheet Music
Sheet Music. Condition: Good. Chas K Harris [Published Date: 1907]. Sheet music, large format (10.75" x 13.5"). Paper covers, 6 pages (including covers). Duet, for voice and piano. In good condition with a few small nicks and tears and light creasing along edges and with longer slits running along the top and bottom of the fold of the outer covers. Light overall scuffing, aging and soiling to pages as well, but otherwise unmarked. Beautiful cover design by Starmer. The song was part of the musical comedy "The Girl Question" that premiered on August 3, 1908, at Wallack's Theatre in New York and later toured throughout America. The show was written by Will M. Hough and Frank R. Adams, with music composed by Joseph E. Howard. It is set in Times Square, New York, and features a lighthearted plot involving romantic entanglements. Will M. Hough (1882 - 1962) was a playwright and lyricist who often collaborated with Frank R. Adams. Together, they wrote the lyrics for several successful musicals. Hough is known for his wit and ability to craft engaging lyrics that contributed to the popularity of early American musical theater. Frank R. Adams (1883 - 1963) was an author, lyricist, and playwright. He worked closely with Hough, and their collaborations were popular during the early 20th century. Adams was known for his contribution to musical comedies, often writing lyrics that balanced humor with charm. Joseph E. Howard (1878 - 1961) was a well-known composer and performer in early 20th-century American theater. He composed the music for "The Girl Question" and numerous other successful productions. Howard was also a vaudeville performer and is remembered for his popular songs, including "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now." [[Verse 1] HE: I've seen a lot of diff'rent kind of girls And of diff'rent kinds of eyes, I've looked in eyes of ev'ry shade there is, And eyes of ev'ry size, It doesn't really matter So much about their size of hue, It all depends whose eyes they are So I like to look at you. [Refrain] When eyes like yours look in eyes like mine, I think I'd like to keep on looking, looking all the time, They're blue, blue, blue, And I was too, Until the day when eyes like yours, looked into eyes like mine. A note about the cover art : Some of the most creative and eye-catching cover art of the ragtime-era were done by one of the prolific, but elusive, Starmer Brothers. Their work was of consistently high quality and they were turning out nearly a quarter of all large format covers from the late 1890s to around 1919. The identity of the artists was unknown until an invoice was discovered with a printed heading describing "Starmer" as artist and medical draughtsman. Not much else is known about the Starmer family.
