Los discursos míticos y religiosos, en cambio, se basan en unos relatos imaginarios consagrados a inventar arbitrariamente, ex nihilo, esta evolución. Más allá de los prejuicios religiosos, que no han dejado de combatir los logros de la ciencia (y no hace falta remontarse a la ejecución de Giordano Bruno o al proceso contra Galileo: hoy mismo los integristas cristianos en EEUU o los islamistas en Turquía, por ejemplo, prosiguen su lucha contra el darwinismo), existe una crítica fundamental al método científico, que cuestiona incluso el carácter de árbitro que ejerce en él la naturaleza. El rechazo de la noción de verdad científica tiene dos fuentes. Una es la lectura literal de los textos sagrados, otra es un relativismo en boga entre determinados especialistas de las ciencias humanas para quienes la ciencia es un mito como los demás. De este modo, la noción de verdad se disuelve y es sustituida por un simple consenso social a través del cual finalmente todos los discursos, míticos o simplemente absurdos, se vuelven equivalentes. Frente a esta irrupción del discurso social en el campo de la ciencia, Hubert Krivine se ha propuesto "rehabilitar la noción considerada ingenua de verdad científica contra la idea de que la ciencia no sería más que una opinión socialmente construida". Para ello, ilustra su objetivo con dos temas: la edad de la Tierra y el movimiento de los planetas del sistema solar, y lejos de afirmar sus tesis dogmáticamente, muestra cómo las ideas sucesivas aparecen, se enfrentan y finalmente permiten que las verdades científicas una Tierra de 4. 500 millones de años, un sistema planetario heliocéntrico emerjan entre una ganga de ideas más o menos falsas y absurdas.
