In 1956, pioneering psychedelic researchers Abram Hoffer and Humphry Osmond were invited to join members of the Red Pheasant First Nation near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, to participate in a peyote ceremony hosted by the Native American Church of Canada. Inspired by their experience, they wrote a series of essays explaining and defending the consumption of peyote and the practice of peyotism. Hoffer's sister, journalist Fannie Kahan documented the religious ceremony and wrote a history of peyote. Their writing advocates for Indigenous legal, political, and religious rights and offers important insights into how psychedelic researchers interpreted the peyote ceremony.

Amid all the bitter controversy concerning other uses of LSD, our authors --- who are among the very first scientific investigators of LSD decades before the public heard about it; Dr. Osmond is the acknowledged coiner of the term psychedelic --- have been quietly and without fanfare pursuing their scientific researches into LSD therapy for alcoholics. Here is their first report to the public on their successes."
