Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hugh Thomson (illustrator). Limited Edition. A very good copy of the limited illustrated edition of Quality Street in full vellum and signed by the artist, Hugh Thomson. Copy number 558/1000, undated but published in 1913. The play, Quality Street, was first published in 1901 and was very popular. The large print run of the limited edition presumably reflects Barrie's personal popularity, as well as the success of the play. With 22 tipped in colour plates, black and white illustrations and designs. This was one of a series of Christmas gift books illustrated by Thomson, an Irish artist, who was much in demand at the time. Probably best known now for his illustrations to the famous Peacock edition of Pride and Prejudice. The binding is very clean with intricate decoration to the front board in gilt with a blue lined border, and gilt titles and designs to the spine. There is some light spotting at the top of the side edge. The spine is slightly darkened at the top end and there is some pale spotting. There is a brown mark at the front spine joint about 2 cm in length and 5 brown spots near the rear spine joint. The back board is very bright apart from a darkened area on the top edge close to the spine and 3 tiny marks. The silk ties are missing and both boards have a slight outwards warp at the side edge. Top page edges are gilted; remainder untrimmed. The contents are complete and in very good condition with tipped in colour frontispiece and 21 further tipped in plates. Each plate has a captionned tissue guard with a small vignette. The free endpapers are lightly browned and the paper is lightly toned towards page edges. There is a small mark on the mount to the frontispiece and a tiny repaired edge tear to p 177. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Add to basketJames Matthew Barrie (2024) 'Peter Pan', deluxe limited edition, published by Conversation Tree Press. One of only 200 numbered copies of which this is no. 3. Signed by illustrator Charles Vess. The book contains Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens as well as Peter and Wendy. Condition: as new and unread. Production details according to the publisher: BINDING The Deluxe state is hand bound by Ludlow Bookbinders in a sumptuous, deep green goatskin leather. The spine has five raised bands and a maroon label with gold tooling above and below. The front board is foil stamped in copper with an illustration, title lettering and the names of the author and artist. Inspired by the Deluxe state of the first edition of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, illustrated by Arthur Rackham, Charles' new iconic take on the younger Peter sees him riding a swan while accompanied by fairies under the moonlight. ILLUSTRATIONS The full-colour frontispiece is printed giclée using pigmented inks on archival Somerset 100% cotton moulde-made paper, while the eight other plates are printed on Nova Matt 150gsm paper, upgraded from the 130gsm used in the Standard state. All plates are tipped in with glassine guards over each. Two double page spread maps, of Kensington Gardens and Neverland, are folded and bound in. PAPER The text block is made of thick, luxurious Magnani Pescia Edition 160gsm (110#) paper. The endpapers are Italian-made Art Nouveau decorative papers from Rossi, also used for the boards of the Standard State. In addition to butterflies, flowers, and flecks of gold, birds are prominently featured on this paper, alluding to Peter's status of being caught "betwixt-and-between" a boy and a bird in Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. ENCLOSURE Each book is enclosed in a custom, handmade, suedel-lined slipcase with rounded top and bottom and chamfered edges around the sides. Each side of the slipcase is foil stamped with the one of the two half-title illustrations created by Charles Vess for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and Peter & Wendy. SIGNATURE Each book is signed by Charles Vess. BOOK SIZE AND DETAILS The edition will be approximately 224 pages with a trim size of 170mm x 240mm (6.7inch x 9.5inch) and will include head and tail bands and a ribbon marker.
