Rueff was a follower of Martin Luther and, although he was "primarily known as a physician, surgeon, and lithotomist, he was also a poet and writer of folk songs. ⦠Much of Rueff's advice stems from that of classical writers or is taken from Rosslin's Rosegarten. A great deal is also very primitive to modern eyes. But it made a start at a time when midwifery had previously been strictly a woman's affair" (Dunn, p. 222). ? He was a physician, surgeon, author and preacher all combined, and was well thought of by his contemporaries. Conrad Gesner refers to him as "Vir in arte sua peritissimus," most skilled in his art. Apart from his medical writings, he wrote verse and several plays, including a couple of comedies and a play based on the story of Wilhelm Tell. After the manner of his day, he dabbled in astronomy and astrology. In 1532, he was made Stadtarzt in Zurich. He died in 1558." (from JAMA).

Bound, imitation leather spine, cardboard covers, in original slipcase, 91pp., 15,5x21,5cm., richly illustr. in b/w., in very good condition (slipcase with light traces of use on the edges, book itself very good). Nr. 340 of 2800 copies De Conceptu et Generatione Hominis (On the Conception and Generation of Man) is an influential historical medical treatise written by the Swiss surgeon and author Jakob Rueff (also known as Jacob Rueff or Jacobus Ruffius). The work served as a primary textbook for midwives and physicians during the Renaissance. It covers obstetrics, human reproduction, female anatomy, fetal development in the womb, and the duties of midwives during childbirth. The book is famous for its detailed woodcuts (often attributed to artist Jost Amman). These illustrations depict the uterus, birth positions, surgical instruments, and even "monstrous" births or deformities, which were a common fascination of the era. It was one of the first works to provide a systematic and illustrated guide to midwifery, bridging the gap between medieval folklore and early modern medical science. This edition, specialy printed for the members of Edition Medicina Rara Ltd, is a facsimile of the original 1587 Frankfurt edition.
