About this Item: A.S. Barnes & Co, 1961. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Fellin, Peter (illustrator). Book Condition: Very Good. The text block is in near fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog ears. The reddish brown cover is in near fine condition with no corner bumping, but the lower part of the spine is slightly bumped. The dust jacket is shelf rubbed and has a few nicks and worn spots. 8 ½ x 6 ¼, 59 pages, 9 ounces. XX [From the dust jacket flap]: In the beautiful village of Nonpiento, where the people are happy and spend much of their time singing little bits of homemade opera, there lived a boy called Niccolo Donatello. His father was the village policeman and sang basso profundo. His mother, Lucia, sang mezzo-soprano, or whatever she could manage. But Niccolo was content to sing canticles and to snuff the candles in Father Dormendo's church. 'Ecco, Niccolo! " cried Father Dormendo. 'He is the best snuffer in all Italy.' Then one day something very exciting happened in Nonpiento. A tall priest arrived in a yellow carriage drawn by a black horse. It was the Cardinal's equerry. He had come to find a boy who could sing treble-o in an opera which the Cardinal had written for the Festival of San Giovanni. Out came the pipes and piccolos, flutes and flageolets. The women of Nonpiento tuned their sons from dawn till dusk, and the men flew into the valleys and onto the hillsides to find peace. But what happened to Niccolo when Lucia tuned him up with a simple conical one-keyed flute? XX [From Philip Lee's website]: Cyril Karel Jaeger was born 13 March 1912 in Bradford, England. He was adopted by the poet and children's author Lady Margaret Sackville (1881-1963), who frequented Edinburgh's salons. Karel Jaeger spent his early life hobnobbing in Scottish literary society. When he was 15, his adoptive mother entrusted his upbringing to her friend the sociologist and town planner Sir Patrick Geddes and his wife. He later pursued French at Montpelier University, but spent less time studying than in the cafés, where he developed a close friendship with the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. A combination of asthma and tuberculosis prompted a two-year spell in a Swiss sanatorium. On the recommendation of doctors, he moved to the south coast of England, funded by a generous inheritance that he immediately set about spending. His extravagances included a white sports car, in which he hurtled around the Sussex lanes with Lydia Nicholls, the glamorous young actress he married in 1936. Through her, he joined an artistic circle that included performers such as Alastair Sim and Herbert Marshall. In 1940, a few months before the publication of his debut novel, ANGELS ON HORSEBACK, Jaeger was conscripted into the army. Following a stint as a bombardier with the Royal Artillery, he became a dispatch rider in the North Africa campaign. He was ultimately invalided out of the military after he rode over a German mine. Recovered from his injuries, Jaeger resumed his life in the seaside resort of Bognor Regis Jaeger produced a second novel entitled THE MAN IN THE TOP HAT (1949). He turned to working as a labourer, meanwhile playing cricket for the Sussex Second Eleven and penning a succession of charming children's books. These books included Men of Fine Parts (1950), Sweet Fanny Adams (1953), The Bull that was Terrifico (1955), The Little Bandita (1957), Niccolo (1959) and Pinook (1960). Critics likened them to the works of Lewis Carroll and Kenneth Grahame. In 1958, Jaeger got a job teaching French, cricket, and fencing at Oakwood Preparatory School in the village of Funtington. He died on 8 September 2008 in Chichester, West Sussex, aged 96. Seller Inventory # 000338
