Item Description: Paris, Hubert Jaillot ., 1698. Copper engraving with original colour in outline (Very Good, small repaired tears in the middle fold), 59 x 91 cm. A map with original colour shows Austria, Slovenia and north of Istria and embraces the area between Bavaria, Tyrol, Veneto, Hungary and Dalmatia. The map was issued in Atlas Nouveau, published in 1693 by Alexis Hubert Jaillot (c.1632-1712) in Paris. Jaillot, today known as a publisher and engraver, was actually schooled as sculptor and even received a title of a sculptor to the king (Sculpteur du Roy). In 1665 he married a sister of a map publisher Nicolas II Berey (1640–1667) and bought the plates after Berey’s death. Jaillot entered the new business at a right time, when France was expanding rapidly under the reign of Louis XIV and was in need of new maps. In 1670 he bought plates by the famous French cartographer Nicolas Sanson (1600 - 1667), whose firm was run after his death by his sons Guillaume and Adrien, and his son-in-law Pierre Du Val. Jaillot had the elder Sanson's maps redrawn, enlarged and printed on finest paper. He published them in Atlas Nouveau, one of the largest general atlases up to that time, first printed in 1681. Editions that followed were revised and enlarged with new maps. This re-vised edition of the map was published in 1698, with the date in the cartouche corrected to that date. Item Description: Paris: H. Jaillot, 1684, 1684. 2 sheets joined (sheet size 25 x 36 4/8 inches ; 21 5/8 x 35 inches to the neat line), full margins showing the plate mark. A fine engraved detailed map of Europe, the title as a running headline and within an extremely elaborate allegorical rococo cartouche, showing the arms of Le Grand Dauphin, Louis de France (1661-1711), detailed scale within a decorative cartouche lower right, with original hand color in outline (light fold marks, a little toned at the edges). A fine and attractive map from a later issue of Jaillot's 'Atlas Nouveau'. The Frenchman Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712) was the most important atlas compiler and publisher of the last quarter of the seventeenth century. The great fire of 1672 which destroyed the Blaeu empire, was his opportunity to take over this part of the market. He and Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), the founder of the French School of Geography, had a working relationship which ended by the end of the 1670s, this led to Jaillot developing his own series of atlases. Due to his tremendous importance and efforts, Jaillot was given the title of Geographe du Roy by Louis XIV The 'Atlas Nouveau' was the result of the intense collaboration between Jaillot and the Sanson family. Item Description: Paris, 1719. Copper-engraved map by Cordier on laid, watermarked paper, hand-coloured in outline, in very good condition. A handsome copy of Burden's 5th issue of Jaillot's map of North America, revised to incorporate the best available information from Guillaume De L'Isle and others, and with strong outline color Hubert Jaillot's son Bernard carried on the family cartography business upon the death of his father in 1712, and in 1713, he issued a much revised and improved map of North America, incorporating the new geographic knowledge procured by De L'Isle and De Fer. In 1719, he issued what would be the fifth state of the map on which California ceased to be an island and the Carolinas were shown as part of the French territory: Floride. It is interesting to look at maps of North America at this period in terms of ambition competing with objectivity. One feels the emotional, political ambitions of England and France to have been boundless and liable to provoke quite pugnacious reactions, even though neither side really knew very well the geography of what they were claiming. The trials of exploration to ascertain actual facts were harsh and often not well rewarded, nor were the explorers always able to know: note LaSalle's account of the Mississippi wandering into Texas before finding the Gulf. Nevertheless, this revised edition of Hubert Jaillot's 17th century map incorporates a great deal of important geographical information: a greatly improved delineation of the Great Lakes, the addition of tributary rivers to the Mississippi, the re-routing of the Rio Grande (R. del Norte) to the Gulf of Mexico and, of course, the re-attachment of California to the continent, though this is done in an equivocal way. Burden, The Mapping of North America II, 709 (5th state); Karpinski, L.C. (MI) XXI; McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island 113, state 2; Wheat, Mapping the Transmississippi West 74. Item Description: Alexis Hubert Jaillot, Paris, 1696. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour and gold embellishment, in excellent condition. A stunning map of Normandy by Alexis Jaillot, an exceptional example with gilt embellishments One of the most important figures in French cartography, Nicolas Sanson initiated the great school of French geographers. Born in Abbeville in 1600, Sanson established his first printing house in Paris in 1638. He soon became geographer to the king, establishing himself as one of the most influential cartographers on the Continent. He was succeeded by his sons, Adrien, and Guillaume, and by his son in law Pierre Duval, who continued to publish a wealth of maps using Sanson's name. At the close of the seventeenth century, Sanson's plates were purchased by the influential cartographer Alexis Hubert Jaillot, who continued to publish his maps and atlases under Sanson's title. This stunning map of Normandy is based on Sanson's map published in 1650, but was redrawn and enlarged by Jaillot. It shows the provinces of Normandy as well as the northern tip of Brittany and part of the English Channel. Both Jersey and Guernsey are included as is Mont St. Michel off the coast of St. Malo. In keeping with all of Sanson's and Jaillot's superb maps, forests, rivers, and towns are meticulously identified and named. The map includes an ornate cartouche in the upper section as well as a scale and key. Tooley, Maps & Map-Makers , pp. 40-41. Bookseller Inventory # 16269

Item Description: Paris, 1695. Copper-engraved by Cordier, period hand-colouring in outline. Beautifully engraved map of North America, here in the rare first state, with California as an island. Although similarly titled to Jaillot's earlier map of 1674, this map is on a slightly smaller scale. Like Jaillot's earlier map, however, it is beautifully engraved and based on the mappings by Sanson. "The attractive title cartouche engraved by C. Simmoneau is adorned with two tropical birds" (Burden). Although Burden cites the first issue as having no date in the top right cartouche enclosing the scale of miles, close inspection reveals the date to have been abraided off. On the present copy, which includes a contemporary manuscript dating of 1695 in the title cartouche, the date "16 - -" appears in the upper right cartouche, with the terminal digits abraided off. Subsequent issues would add a title below Jaillot's name and amend the mapping of the region to reflect changing boundaries and the creation of colonies. The map would be reissued with such changes until the end of the 18th century. The first and early issues, however, are scarce. Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 709; McLaughlin, The Mapping of California as an Island 101; McCorkle, New England in Early Printed Maps 695.5; Tooley, "California as an Island," 38 in Tooley, The Mapping of America. Item Description: Paris: H. Jaillot, 1694., 1694. JAILLOT, Alexis Hubert (ca.1632-1712). Novis Orbis Tabula, ad usum Serenissimi Burgundiae Ducis.Paris: H. Jaillot, 1694. Single sheet (20 4/8 x 25 inches, full margins showing the plate-mark). Fine engraved double-hemisphere map of the world with fine hand-colour in full, the title in a banner across the top edges, and surrounded by an elaborate allegorical border. An attractive world map, prepared by Jaillot for his "Atlas Royal" which was published by de Fer in 1695 and again in 1699. Showing the western and northern coastline of Australia and the eastern coastline of New Zealand. The Frenchman Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712) was born in the small hamlet of Avignon in Franche Comte. In 1657 he traveled to Paris with his brother Simon and found employment as a sculptor. He was fortunate to meet the Flemish engraver Nicolas Berey, the publisher and mapmaker to the Queen. His subsequent marriage to Jeanne Berey resulted in Jaillot joining his father-in-law in trade. Much of Jaillot's work depended on the maps of his predecessor, Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), the greatest French map-maker of his generation and the founder of the French School of Geography. The great fire of 1672 destroyed the Blaeu mapmaking empire in Holland and Jaillot quickly acted to fill the gap now left in the market. Near 1670, Sanson's sons entered into collaboration with Jaillot to produce the monumental "Atlas Nouveau", which included enlarged and embellished renderings of Sanson's magnificent maps. Jaillot's efforts awarded him the title of Royal Geographer by Louis XIV. Shirley 561. Bookseller Inventory # 72map414
