Item Description: New York: Ballantine Books 1st Editions, 1st and Later Printings 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 & 1974, 1974. Mass Market Paperback. Book Condition: Near Fine. Bob Pepper, Sheryl Slavitt, Ray Cruz, Donna Violetti, Frank C. Pape, Gervasio Gallardo, George Barr, Robert LoGrippo, Bill Martin, David Johnston, Brian Froud, Vincent Di Fate, Dean Ellis, Allan Mardon, Others (front covers) (illustrator). Later and/or First Printings. ----------This heavy set will require NO additional shipping charges for a US or Canadian order, overseas orders will require a shipping charge DRAMATICALLY LESS than actual postage (inquire). 88 paperbacks, some are Canadian printings. From 1969 to 1974, Ballantine Books, under the editorship of writer and fantasy authority Lin Carter, issued the acclaimed Ballantine Adult Fantasy series. The series is identified by having a unicorn head in a circle (2 somewhat different designs) on the front cover, and very colourful almost psychedelic covers, mostly wraparound. The majority had excellent introductions by editor Carter. The 88 volumes offered here consist of first edition paperback originals, new paperback printings of long out-of-print fantasy classics, reprints of earlier Ballantine Books (Last Unicorn by Beagle, Voyage to Arcturus by Lindsay and the Gormenghast Trilogy by Peake), and even later printings of volumes earlier issued as Ballantine Adult Fantasies (Broken Sword by Anderson, Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath by Lovecraft, Well at the World's End by Morris, etc.). All 88 volumes offered here have the unicorn head on the front cover, and are the ALMOST complete set of Ballantine Adult Fantasies bearing the unicorn head. The only volumes known to the bookseller bearing the unicorn head and not included here are the 5th printing of The Last Unicorn by Beagle, the 4th printing of Titus Groan by Peake, and the 5th printing of Gormenghast by Peake (3 volumes in all). Other volumes issued by Ballantine in the time-frame offered here (and later) mention Ballantine Adult Fantasy on the cover, but they do NOT have the unicorn head or introductions by Carter, and are NOT included here (some examples are Fine and Private Place by Beagle, the first printing of Last Unicorn by Beagle, Fungi from Yuggoth by Lovecraft). To be clear, only 91 volumes, to the bookseller's knowledge, had the unicorn head, and 88 of those 91 volumes are offered here. Condition of the books is from at least VG to unread fine, with most being near fine. Each book is in a plastic paperback bag. Titles follow, along with number of printings if more than one: Poul Anderson: The Broken Sword (2), Hrolf Kraki's Saga / Ariosto: Orlando Furioso / Peter S. Beagle: The Last Unicorn (2) / William Beckford: Vathek / Hannes Bok: Beyond the Golden Stair, The Sorcerer's Ship / Ernest Bramah: Kai Lung Unrolls His Mat, Kai Lung's Golden Hours / James Branch Cabell: The Cream of the Jest, Domnei, Figures of Earth, The High Place, The Silver Stallion, Something About Eve / Lin Carter (author): Imaginary Worlds / Lin Carter (editor): Discoveries in Fantasy, Dragons Elves and Heroes, Golden Cities Far, Great Short Novels of Adult Fantasy Volume I, Great Short Novels of Adult Fantasy Volume II, New Worlds for Old, The Spawn of Cthulhu, The Young Magicians / Joy Chant: Red Moon and Black Mountain (2) / G.K. Chesterton: The Man Who Was Thursday / Edmund Cooper & Roger Lancelyn Green: Double Phoenix / F. Marion Crawford: Khaled / L. Sprague de Camp & Fletcher Pratt: Land of Unreason / Lord Dunsany: At the Edge of the World, Beyond the Fields We Know, The Charwoman's Shadow (2), Don Rodriguez, The King of Elfland's Daughter (2), Over the Hills and Far Away / H. Rider Haggard: The People of the Mist (2), The World's Desire (with Andrew Lang) / William Hope Hodgson: The Boats of the Glen Carrig, The Night Land Volume I, The Night Land Volume II / C.J. Cutliffe Hyne: The Lost Continent (2) / Katherine Kurtz: Deryni Rising, Deryni Checkmate, High Deryni / Sanders Anne Laubenthal: Excalibur / David Lindsay: A Voyage to Arcturus (2) / H.P. Lovecraft: The Doom That Came to Sarnath, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (3) / George MacDonald: Evenor, Lilith (2), Phantastes / Arthur Machen: The Three Imposters / George Meredith: The Shaving of Shagpat / Hope Mirrlees: Lud-In-the-Mist / William Morris: The Sundering Flood, The Water of the Wondrous Isles, The Well at the World's End Volume I. Item Description: John Day Company, New York, 1926. Cloth. Book Condition: Near Fine. Underwood, Leon (illustrator). First and Limited Edition. New York: John Day, 1926. First edition, one of 3,000 copies in that edition. Typed Letter Signed from Cabell tipped in. Illustrated with 8 wood engravings by Leon Underwood. Quarto, 54 pp., black cloth with paper spine label. Near fine, with age toning to the paper spine label and a nice small bookseller's label on the [Thalhimer's Bookshop] for the collector of those, but no notable flaws; nearly pristine. TLS has one fold for mailing, is otherwise fine. This was the first book ever published by the John Day Company. If one includes Beyond Life as the initiating title of Cabell's Poictesme series, Music From Behind the Moon is the fourth part and is the beginning of an internal trilogy about Manuel's daughter, Ettare. High fantasy, with stylish complementary engravings by Underwood. TLS is on letterhead address 3201 Monument Avenue, Richmond, VA and is dated 28 September 1929. L-FLTHC. Signed by Author(s).
