Item Description: The figment press, Mill Valley California, 1982. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Limited Edition. James Cady Ewell was a very special artist. recognizing the unique expressions of his pen and ink drawings that ranged from battling centaurs, the plunging steeds drawing the chariot of Phoebus Apollo, and swirling scenes of the circus, to idyllic, lace like forests in which danced and rode the wood land nymphs, the Art Institute of Chicago gave his a one man show in the Spring of 1919. It is from the works exhibited in that show and the illustrations for a book of poetry by fellow Chicagoan John Grimes that most of the reproductions of this folio ar drawn. A prospectus from the May through June show and exhibition hall photo are included within the book. The works are all in black and exhibit early twentieth century romanticism joined with symbolic mid-century Western European precision. The works are quite wonderful and include 14 plates and five illustrations and a striking scene from the circus covering the front paste-down and FFEP and the rear paste-down and LFEP. Book is in new condition. What I presume to be the publishers slipcase is very fine with only slight surface scratches.Slipcase is hard board with black velvet lining. Book is bound in brown paper over boards and the spine is quarter bound using black velvet. Paper front label and spine label are flawless. Fore and bottom edges are untrimmed while the top edge is trimmed. The book was designed and printed by Dianne Ewell Weiss at the Figment Press, Mill Valley California. It has been hand set in Palatino, printed on BFK Rives and bound in Roma. This copy is #30 of an addition of one hundred and sixty. For those who love fine art and fine printing and book making, this rare and highly desirous book must be in your collection your collection. Bookseller Inventory # 000868
