Dated October 20, 1976, the letter reads: "Dear Dr. -----, Thank you for your good letter. The trick of keeping the wolf away from the door was something we had to learn early. It meant increasing effort of course. But that did not bother any of us who had the will to survive. Yours was a good warm letter and it was much appreciated by me and my sole surviving brother. Let's say it was not fun all the time, but the laughs were there. All the best to you and yours. Sincerely, James Cagney." A beautiful signed copy with a very interesting letter. Signed by Author. About this Item: 1929. Garden City New York. Doubleday, Doran & Company. 1929. Crown 8vo. Original cloth; a nice, bright copy. First US edition. From the library of the actor James Cagney with his bookplate. With an interesting earlier provenance from a pencil note in the Hollywood actor Noel Madison's hand "Nat Madison Hollywood Dec 1929 from Noel Coward". Coward visited Hollywood in December 1929 "Looking back over my ten days in Hollywood made me gasp a bit and wish for a little neat brandy.I remember, chaotically, a series of dinner parties, lunch parties, cocktail parties and even breakfast parties". Noel "Nat" Madison was an American actor of stage and screen. His father was a famous character actor, Maurice Moscovitch who sent his son abroad to study in Paris, Lausanne, and London. Upon returning to the U.S. following his stage debut in Great Britain, he began an active career on the American stage, specializing in highly sophisticated characters. In 1930, he began appearing in films, most often in roles far different from the upper-class types he played on stage, mostly as gangsters and low-lifes. Madison signed up with Warner Brothers and his first two films Sinners' Holiday (1930) and Doorway to Hell (1930) coincided with the first two films to feature James Cagney. Cagney and Coward may well have also met in this flurry of socialising. It has been suggested that Coward's 1932 song Mad about the Boy was directed at the young Cagney. Do What You Will includes Huxley's essay on the new "talking" pictures, Silence is Golden, in which Huxley compares the first motion picture in which spoken dialogue is heard, 'The Jazz Singer', to a "brimming bowl of hog-wash". About this Item: Burbank Warner Brothers 1941, 1941. First Edition. A small archive including a shooting script, a Typed Letter Signed, and a group of rewrite pages, all from the personal library of James Cagney with his bookplate laid in each. The film starred James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland, Rita Hayworth, Alan Hale, and was directed by Raoul Walsh. Cagney plays Biff Grimes, a correspondent school dentist whose life is turned upside down by a chiseling contractor who steals his girl and five years of his life when he is sent to prison on a bum rap, but Grimes gets the last laugh in the end. The shooting script is 140 pages, with the working title One Sunday Afternoon, dated ÒAugust 9, 1940Ó, with many colored rewrite pages, bound with brads in tan studio wrappers. The Typed Letter Signed, one page, is on Warner Brothers stationery and is from CagneyÕs brother, William Cagney, who was Associate Producer on the film and writes in regards to the group of rewrite pages: ÒDear Jim: . . . I believe by the time we start shooting we will have a nicely rounded story. The reason I particularly like the vehicle is because it is a definite departure from the hackneyed formula which you have been saddled with . . . Love to all, Brother Bill, W.C.Ó Accompanied by blue and yellow rewrite pages, 17 pages, with many corrections and additions in James CagneyÕs hand. About fine. From the auction sale of James CagneyÕs estate. James Cagney was a fine actor who was best known for his work in Public Enemy with Mae Clarke where he was a ruthless Prohibition gangster, as well as Yankee Doodle Dandy, Man of a Thousand Faces, Angels with Dirty Faces, What Price Glory, etc. Seller Inventory # 5412N
