Settling in Bristol in 1810, he was appointed physician to St. Peter’s Hospital in 1811 and to the Bristol Infirmary in 1814. His Coat of Arms features on the Bailiff's pew in the Town Church, St Peter Port. MacCulloch was born in Guernsey in 1808. He was educated at La Plaiderie, St Peter Port and an academy in Brussels. He was actively involved in several the major Victorian building projects, including the of St Barnabas Church and St Stephens Church. He was on the committee responsible for the construction of Victoria Tower in 1848, and was States Supervisor when the foundation stone of the new harbor was laid. He was elected Jurat in 1844. In 1869, he became Lieutenant Bailiff, and in 1884 was appointed Bailiff of Guernsey. He was knighted in 1886, and retired due to ill-health in 1895. In 1873 he persuaded the States to buy the near-derelict Chapel of St Appoline in St Saviours - the first ancient monument to be acquired by the States of Guernsey. In 1886, he persuaded the States to vote £200, which together with private contributions, funded the Model Yacht Pond on the Castle Emplacement. He was fascinated with old traditions, beliefs, customs and superstitions of the island, and he wrote down to form the basis for the book, Guernsey Folk Lore, which was edited and published by Edith Carey after his death in 1903. A very good copy which is illustrated with 35 full page hand coloured and 5 black and white engravings, including several of Native Americans after George Catlin, and 90 wood engraved text illustrations. The book collates as per the list of plates with the addition of the frontispiece, Native of New Zealand, not called for in the list. A set of six large maps were issued separately, at a price of 15 shillings, to accompany this work but they are seldom found with copies of this work and the book is complete without them. A few pages with minor marks but overall a very clean and fresh copy, finely recently bound in half dark blue Morocco leather. Raised bands, the compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. First edition of this finely illustrated ethnographical study of mankind. The present work was of major importance for its assemblage of organized data on human population. Prichard sets forth the differences of color, hair, stature and form. He examines the value of each criterion as evidence of differences in race, and maintains that all mankind is descended from one family.Prichard (1786-1848) was a physician and anthropologist as well as a pioneer in the moral treatment of the insane.
