About this Item: W H LIZARS, Edinburgh, 1835. Decorative Cloth. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. A fair copy of the 1st edition of British Butterflies, vol III of Entomology from the Naturalist's Library edited by Sir William Jardine. In the original publisher's cloth binding with gilt titles to the spine, with 34 plates of which 32 are hand coloured. With volume listing for the Naturalist's Library; notice from the publisher; half title; frontispiece portrait of Werner; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Werner; text with illustrations, 2 plain plates and 32 hand coloured plates - tissue-guarded; and publishers adverts (20 pages) at the rear. The binding is complete but the spine has a couple of vertical creases and there is some chipping at the top, and general pulling. Corners are bumped. Internally the original green endpapers are present. The front endpapers have a bit of a messy repair at the joint and there is a small hole in the fep. There is the signature of Francis Hemming, the naturalist, to the fep and his bookplate to the front pastedown. There is a small black mark to the bottom side of the frontispiece mirrored on the vignette title page where there is a small piece missing from the side margin. Plate 11 is loose at the bottom gather and plate 18 has torn tissue guard. Overall contents are clean but the paper, both text and plate, is toned, particularly towards the margins. With listing of the Naturalist's Library; half title; black and white engraved frontispiece of Madame Merian; black and white vignette title page - showing 2 cherubs chasing butterflies; 2 further title pages; an advert; contents listing; Memoir of Maria Sibilla Merian; text with 30 hand coloured plates bound in; and 4 pp publisher's catalogue (for Simpkin Marshall) at the rear. The binding has had an expert cloth case repair to relay the spine, so the binding is sound and tight. The spine and board edges are faded with some lighter patches to the back board. There is a small ink spot on the front board. The original green endpapers are present with the bookplate of Francis Hemming to the front pastedown. The endpapers have repair at the joints and there are a couple of spots and a very small tear to the front pastedown. The text and plate paper has light toning, particularly at the top page edges. A couple of pages in the introduction have slight damage to side margins from poor opening. There is a small ripple to the top part of plate 25; loose tissue guard to plate 4; repaired tear to the top edge of p 102 and a vertical crease (from binding) to p 90. Contents clean. The original green endpapers are present and there is a bookplate of William Moult, Knowsley to the front pastedown.The contents are very clean with well-coloured plates. There is a small insert at the contents page about publications. The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine and green endpapers. It is therefore sound and tight. The spine is slightly faded and there is a little scuffing to the boards and light corner wear. Internally there is the bookplate of Francis Hemmings, the noted entomologist to the front pastedown endpaper. The endpaper joints have repair. The binding has had an expert cloth case repair relaying the spine and is therefore sound and tight. There is a small identation to the edge of the front board, some lighter patches on the back board and the corners are lightly bumped. The original green endpapers are present with repair to joint area. There is the bookplate of Francis Hemming, a noted entomologist who specialised in the Lepidoptera, to the front pastedown endpaper. There has been expert paper repair to a couple of side margins and text page 73 has lost its top corner having been badly opened. Much of the later text is unopened. The binding is in very good bright clean condition. It has been expertly rebacked relaying the original spine so it is sound and tight.There is a little mottled fading to the top of front and back boards. The original green endpapers have been retained, with repair at the joint. There is a decorative bookplate of Francis Hemming, the noted entomologist, to the front pastedown, and the signature of A G Hemming, Orpington, to the fep. Contents in very good clean condition with very well-coloured plates. Plate 18 has a small mark not affecting the butterfly. Book has a very slight smokey odour. Publisher's catalogue at the rear.
