About this Item: Harper & Brothers, New York, New York, 1875. Condition: Good +. First edition thus. Single volume--six issues bound without covers and advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, 920 pages, three-quarter leather over black cloth. A good + hard cover with general shelf wear, boards scuffed at the bottom edges and the top and bottom leather edges of the back strip, fore-corner tips worn through to boards, front cover cloth faded, hinges cracked but secure and binding solid, paper clean, moderately yellowed with some light scattered foxing. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: ''Harper's Magazine' began publication in 1850 and recreated the American magazine, serving as a promotional vehicle for Harper and Brothers books as well as the new 'literary' fiction and essay of the time, using sophisticated illustration and the best authors. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. An excellent resource. Three-quarter leather over cloth. Seller Inventory # 20485

About this Item: Government Printing Office, Washington, 1875. Leather & Marbled Boards. Condition: Poor. Thomas Moran, J. K. Hillers, James Fennemore, and E. O. Beaman (illustrator). First Edition. First edition, Quarto, pp. 291 with 80 figures on 72 plates and two folding maps bound in at rear (large folding map of Green and White Rivers, and river profile sheet). In later leather and marbled boards. Many illustrations of Grand Canyon scenes by Thomas Moran and engravings based on photographs presumably taken by J. K. Hillers, James Fennemore, and E. O. Beaman. The classic original volume of this much celebrated, analyzed, and reprinted expedition and report (the account is actually a combination of Powell's first and second Canyon trips). An essential Grand Canyon book. Very scarce complete with pocket map and profile present. *** This volume is one of the greatest river exploration books ever written. It documents Powell's successful navigation of the Colorado River through the uncharted Grand Canyon, which was then the last wild, untamed river of the American West. Powell's first expedition left Green River, Wyoming, in 1869 with ten men and four boats. After three months and almost 1,000 miles, only five of the party emerged from the canyon, the rest leaving the expedition enroute out of fear of the river. This trip, and the ones to follow, made Powell an immediate national celebrity and helped him secure funding for later surveys. The Grand Canyon region offers study of certain geological problems perhaps unequaled anywhere in the rest of the world, especially stratigraphic succession and erosion. In addition to his thrilling description of his river trip, the report also contains his examinations of the geology of the area. The report contains several geological firsts, including the concept of antecedent and consequent valleys, base level of erosion, and recognition that the canyon was formed by the river cutting into the strata as the land was lifting, not cutting downward from a pre-established stable surface. These pioneering ideas, combined with the work of Dutton and Gilbert, helped form the foundation for the new science of geomorphology. *** Condition: Complete with all plates and maps. Covers detached and lacking backstrip but text block remains intact. Heavy shelfwear and rubbing to leather. Interior unmarked and clean, with the exception of a stray marginal smudge to a few pages and light spotting to one plate. Poor exterior but very good interior. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
