Item Description: Vintage Books; Random House, Inc., New York, 1986. Soft cover. Book Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition (Reissue). INDISPENSABLE: EPOCHAL: BRILLIANT: NEW paperback, 1st Vintage paperback edition (orig. 1986), 21st printing (c. 2010), new cover w/ sharp new edges & corners, immaculate smooth-cut text-block exterior, new uncreased binding, pristine interior handsomely printed on excellent paper * 6.12" x 9.24" x 1.42", 0.94 kg, xix+657 (676) pp. * Contents: Preface by Richard Ellmann (ix), Foreword by Hans Walter Gabler (xv), A Note on the Text by Hans Walter Gabler (xix); Ulysses: Telemachus (3), Nestor (20), Proteus (31), Calypso (45), Lotus Eaters (58), Hades (72), Aeolus (96), Lestrygonians (124), Scylla and Charybdis (151), Wandering Rocks (180), Sirens (210), Cyclops (240), Nausicaa (284), Oxen of the Sun (314), Circe (350), Eumaeus (501), Ithaca (544), Penelope (608); Afterword by Michael Groden (645) * One of the most important novels of the 20th century, "Ulysses" was first published in Paris in 1922. Almost as soon as it appeared, the author began to compile a list of errata, & publishers have continued the process ever since, quite often inadvertently adding to the list. In 1974, an international team of scholars headed by Professor Hans Walter Gabler began to study manuscript evidence, typescripts, & proofs in an attempt to produce as accurate a new edition as possible. When it appeared in a three-volume, extensively annotated edition in 1984, the New York Times hailed it as a monumental achievement. The book here offered is a new copy of the first trade paperback of the corrected Gabler edition issued by Random House, which published the first legally printed edition of "Ulysses" in any English-speaking country, and which, in its successful defense of the book against charges of obscenity, established a landmark in American literary history. This critical edition -- the first critical edition to be undertaken of "Ulysses" or for any of Joyce's works -- reports for the first edition well over 5,000 departures from the author's own text as established from the documents of composition. Established on critical principles of scholarly editing, this new original text of "Ulysses" replaces the text made public in the book's first printing and in every subsequent printing since 1922. The main editorial achievement of this edition, the fruit of seven years of textual research & editorial labor, is centered on the establishment of the text. This new reading text is here offered to the scrutiny of every critical reader and adventurous explorer of the novel & to all lovers of Joyce for their enhanced enjoyment of "Ulysses.". Item Description: Garland Publishing, E-39, 1984. Hardcover. Hardcover. 8vo. Garland Publishing, Inc. 1984. 3 Volumes. 1919 pgs total. Bound in blue and grey cloth boards with gilt bow present to the front board. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. Previous owner's bookplate present to the reverse of the front board. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Joyce’s Ulysses was published on his 40th birthday, 2 February 1922, in a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies. The text was full of misprints, as Joyce irritatedly knew. As late as November, he had been tinkering with the last chapters, getting further detail from Dublin – ‘Is it possible for an ordinary person to climb over the area railings of No 7 Eccles Street, either from the path or the steps, lower himself down from the lowest part of the railings till his feet are within 2 feet or 3 of the ground and drop unhurt? ’ he wrote to his Aunt Josephine – and the galleys were demanding attention he couldn’t give them. On 6 November he complained to Harriet Shaw Weaver that ‘working as I do amid piles of notes at a table in a hotel I cannot possibly do this mechanical part with my wretched eye and a half. ’ He evidently decided that he couldn’t do much about the printer’s errors in time for the birthday, but he hoped they would be corrected ‘in future editions’. E-39; 2 x 10 x 8 Inches; 1919 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 49599
