Item Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, New York, 1908. Book Condition: Very Good. First edition thus. An ex library copy with markings to the spine and endpapers. A single bound volume of six complete issues without original wraps are advertisements. Small quarto, 9 3/4" tall, vi + 768 pages, three-quarter leather over maroon cloth with gilt spine titles. Overall, a very good, clean, sturdy hard cover, exterior leather shelf worn and rubbed through at the corners, hinges and binding solid, paper clean and lightly yellowed. This is the publisher's edition, printed from the original plates and includes all of the editorial material (articles, stories, poetry, etc.) of the separate issues but lacks the advertisements and individual covers. It was the practice of the time for most of the better literary magazines to issue such editions before melting down the original printers' plates. Note: the earlier 'Scribner's Monthly' had been retitled 'The Century Magazine' in 1881, under new management. This 'Scribner's Magazine' began publication in January 1887 under the editorship of the legendary Edward L. Burlingame and set a new standard for older publications such as 'Harper's' and 'Atlantic,' publishing many more women writers, developing new illustrators, as well as authors, while fashioning a more 'modern' and accessible style of prose for the reader. Subject matters range from art, fiction, and poetry to history and science. As such it makes a terrific read as an anthology of its moment in time. Three-quarter leather over cloth. Item Description: Ronald L. Smith, New York, 1955. Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good. Pat Patterson (cover); interior art undredited (illustrator). First Edition. New York: Ronald L. Smith, 1955. First edition. November, 1955 / whole number 46/ issue number 12 under the name Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser (which is the last name for the famed sci-fi / fantasy fanzine, which was also published under the earlier names "Fantasy Advertiser" and "Science Fiction Advertiser", though the primary focus was always Science Fiction). Ron Smith became the Editor/Publisher with the November, 1954 issue, which was also the first under this name. Octavo, stapled illustrated wraps, 42 pp. Very Good plus to about near fine; two chips at bottom front cover, peripheral toning (see scans). s This November / 1955 issue was published as Ron Smith was continuing to improve the fanzine, which had been erratic in quality in prior years; 1956, yet to come, would be perhaps the best year. Though credited artwork is still sparse, there's plenty inside to enjoy; a rare short story - "Infiltration" by Carl Larsen - and articles, editorials, essays and reviews by editor Smith, William L. Freeman, Randall Garrett, Robert Silverberg, Lin Carter, Dave Mason, James Blish, George W. Price, Carl Larsen, Joe Schaumburger, R.S. Montague, S. Ostlund, Bob Tucker - all these pieces being, and having always been to this point, the meat of the fanzine under its several names. See scan of contents page. A rarity, for the collector. l-pr1.
