Item Description: Clearfield Publishing. Book Condition: BRAND NEW. BRAND NEW Softcover - 163pp - The first half of Tapestry consists of a historical overview of African Americans in southeastern Connecticut from 1680 to 1865. The authors focus on the arrival of blacks in Connecticut, the African-American family, and the role played by African Americans in the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Much of the action takes place in the towns of Groton, East Haddam, New London, Chatham, and Hebron. In the second part of the volume, Dr. Rose and Mrs. Brown produce, as illustrations, genealogical sketches of the following African-American families: Beman, Boham, Bush, Freeman, Hallan, Hyde, Jacklin, Jackson, Lathrop, Magira, Mason, Moody, Peters, Quash, Rogers, and Wright. While readers will discover information in a number of these genealogies that is repeated in Brown and Rose's Black Roots in Southeastern Connecticut, 1650-1900, researchers should check the accounts in Tapestry for embellishments. Item Description: New London County Historical Society, New London, CT, 2001. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket as Issued. 1st. scarce item; 254 clean, unmarked pages, Black Roots in Southeastern Connecticut, 1650-1900, represents a milestone in the publishing of African-American genealogy. Authors Brown and Rose spent eight years gathering every shred of information they could find on approximately 2,000 African-American families who inhabited one or more of 26 counties in Southeastern Connecticut. Their sources consisted primarily of U.S. census records from 1790 through 1870 and secondarily on manumission records, deeds, probate records, diaries, church records, and military records. In particular, Brown and Rose have amassed an amazing amount of information on blacks who were living in an area that, on the eve of the Revolutionary War, had one of the largest slave populations in New England. The authors cite the specific source for each element appearing in their genealogical sketches. The brief introduction summarizes some of the challenges of investigating black roots, while the bibliography, name index, and subject index at the back of the volume make using the book quite easy. 722 pp. map, index; green c; in mylar protective wraps Size: 8 vo.
