About this Item: Chess Digest, Dallas, 1970. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 36 pages with photographs, tables and diagrams. Octavo (9" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. World Championship Series. (Lusis: 2247), At the end of June 1883, Steinitz challenged Zukertort to a match, and proposed conditions. Zukertort agreed in principle to the match, but his poor health after his tournament victory did not permit the stress of such a match in the near future. Steinitz emigrated to the USA in late 1883. The main disagreement was location: Steinitz wanted to play in the USA, but not in London, where he had encountered unfairness and hostility. Zukertort, on the other hand, insisted on a match in London, where his financial backers resided. Finally, in mid-1885 Zukertort agreed to a match in the USA and Steinitz agreed to play a return match in London. A forfeit deposit of $250 was imposed. Steinitz forwarded the sum at the beginning of December 1885. Zukertort arrived in New York on December 13 but the transmission of his deposit was delayed, so the match began later than originally planned. The conditions for the first official world chess championship match were signed on December 29, 1885. The stakes were $2,000 a side, with a guarantee of at least $750 to the winner and $500 to the loser. The winner would be the first to win 10 games. In case of 9:9 (draws not counting), the match was to be declared drawn. The time control was 30 moves in 2 hours and then 15 moves in 1 hour. The match was to begin in New York and remain in that venue until one player had scored 4 wins. Then it would move to St. Louis until one player had won 3 games there. The rest of the match was to take place in New Orleans. The match began on January 11, 1886 in Cartier's Hall, Fifth Avenue, in New York. The New York leg ended January 20, when Zukertort scored 4 consecutive victories after losing the first game. Play was resumed on February 3 in St. Louis. The St. Louis leg ended on February 10 after Steinitz scored 3 wins and a draw. After a rest of almost 2 weeks, the New Orleans leg began on February 26. Play took place in the New Orleans Chess, Checkers and Whist Club at the corner of Baronne and Canal Street. After a draw, Steinitz pulled ahead with 2 wins. Zukertort struck back with a win, but managed only 3 draws and another loss in the next games. Steinitz then went on to win the last 3 games, becoming the first official world champion on March 29, 1886 with a final score of (+10 -5 =5). Condition: Corners bumped else a very good to fine copy. The city of Parnu, Estonia1 held its first ever international tournament from July 16-25, 1937. Among the attendees were Czechoslovakian masters Salomon Flohr and Karel Opocensky, Swedish champion Gideon Ståhlberg, and Dr. Savielly Tartakower. Schmidt all but ran away with the tournament, being felled only by Ståhlberg, but clearly establishing the strength of Estonia and her chess masters as a future international figure in world chess. The other tournament read from the back to the front. The Leningrad City Chess Championship is a chess tournament held officially in the city of Leningrad, Russia starting from 1920. The city was called Petrograd from 1914 to 1924, then Leningrad until 1991, and Saint Petersburg afterwards. Only players born or living in or around the city were allowed to participate in this event. Reuben Fine finished first in the 1937 edition with Grigory Levenfish a point behind in second. About this Item: James R Schroeder, Cleveland, 1970. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. ii+22 typescript pages with diagrams, drawings and tables. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. Signed by Schroeder on the publication page. (Lusis: 1463) First edition. Of all the memorable Hastings tournaments, this one must rank near the top for suspense and unexpected twists.(1) The list of players was one of the most impressive in Hastings history, with former World Champion Capablanca, future champions Euwe and Botvinnik, championship contender Flohr, and the brilliant young Hungarian, Lilienthal. The tournament had gotten off to a slow start, with only Thomas able to win in the first round. Then things picked up a bit, as Thomas proceded to outplay Capablanca and Botvinnik in rounds 2 and 3. Euwe put a temporary halt to the foolishness by beating Thomas in round 4 to tie for the lead, and kept up the good work by following with three points from his next four games. However, this only sufficed for second place, since Thomas scored 3½, including a win over Lilienthal and a draw with Flohr. So that set up the last round. Not only was Thomas having the tournament of his life, his last round opponent was fellow countryman Michell. In almost any other country, at any other time, the result would have been foreordained: a friendly draw, and Thomas finishes no worse than a tie for first. Indeed, many players had to be rooting for the universally beloved Thomas to win and come in sole first. But that's not how Sir George Thomas played chess. The game was hard-fought, and Michell emerged victorious. But there was a happy ending; Max Euwe, in a better position against tail-ender Norman, made a sporting gesture of his own by offering a draw and settling for a first-place tie with Thomas and Flohr, who had been hanging around in the background the whole time. Condition, Corners bumped, spine sunned else a very good copy. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # C1438

About this Item: James R Schroeder, Cleveland, 1972. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 42 unnumbered pages with drawings, diagrams and tables. Octavo (8 1/2" x 6 3/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Signed by author. (Lusis: 1432) First edition To celebrate the opening of the Kasino Klub, February 23, 1914, in Baden by Vienna, Austria, it was decided to sponsor an international chess tournament. George Marco, publisher of the Wiener Schachzeitung, was authorized to organize and direct this event. Marco decided to hold a Gambit tournament because he was bored with the usual tedious repertoire of most chess masters. In order to make the games more interesting and original he declared that only Gambit Openings would be allowed. When Gambits are played the players are forced to play fighting chess. The acceptance of the Gambit was not mandatory, but a player must obtain permission from the tournament committee and specify the variation he intended to play in order to decline the Gambit. Unfortunately the Baden event overlapped the great St Petersburg tournament, which attracted many of the world's best foreign masters. Nevertheless a good field entered the double-round tournament which permitted any gambit except the universally popular Queen's Gambit! The ten player list was headed by the strong Danube contingent of Carl Schlechter, Rudolf Spielmann, Savielly Tartakower and Richard Reti - complimented by Gyula Breyer, Paul Johner, Hans Fahrni, Karel Opocensky, Karel Hromadka and Gustaf Nyhlom. The gambit warrior Spielmann repeated his Abbazia triumph by posting (+9-2=7). Tartakower secured second place with a last round draw against Hromadka which enabled him to edge the undefeated Schlechter by a half point. A half point behind for fourth was Breyer followed by Johner and Reti whom finished a disappointing fifth through sixth. Fahrni and Hromadka shared seventh and eight with scores of 8. Ninth was Opocensky followed by Nyholm. (Goldman: Carl Schlechter!) Condition: Signed on the front page, corners gently bumped else a very good copy. Seller Inventory # C1300

The 1904 Cambridge Springs International Chess Congress was the first major international chess tournament in America in the twentieth century. It featured the participation of World Champion Emanuel Lasker, who had not played a tournament since 1900 and would not play again until 1909. After the tournament Lasker moved to America and started publishing Lasker's Chess Magazine, which ran from 1904 to 1907. However, that was not the only chess magazine spawned by the tournament. The Daily Bulletins produced by Hermann Helms proved so popular that Helms started the American Chess Bulletin as a direct consequence of the tournament. Volume 1, Issue 1 of the magazine was devoted to Cambridge Springs. Helms was somewhat more successful than Lasker as a publisher and American Chess Bulletin would be edited and published by Helms from 1904 until his death in 1963. The surprising upset victory of Frank Marshall marked his rise to prominence in American chess and he would eventually reign as champion of the United States for twenty six years. Cambridge Springs 1904 marked the end of Harry Nelson Pillsbury's chess career. He would not play another tournament before his death in 1906 at the age of 33. Janowski, Marshall and Teichmann all started the tournament very strongly. After six rounds Janowski led with 5½ points, followed closely by Marshall and Teichmann with 5. Teichmann became ill and would only score an additional 1½ points in the remaining nine rounds. Marshall and Janowski continued their torrid pace through the ninth round where they both had eight points, followed by Lasker in third with 6½. In the tenth round however, Janowski started to falter and lost two games in a row, including one to Fox. Going into the 15th and final round Marshall was in first place with 12 points, but he was only one point ahead of Janowski, who in turn was only one point ahead of Lasker. Marshall played black against Fox who was up a pawn after 20 moves. However, Fox quickly blundered a rook and Marshall won. Meanwhile Janowski and Lasker were playing against each other for second place. Janowski, with a one-point lead, only needed a draw with the white pieces to clinch the second prize. Janowski launched a very spirited attack against Lasker's king, which was stuck in the center of the board. Lasker was up to the challenge though, and built a defense that turned back Janowski's attack and eventually won the game. Marshall finished first, undefeated with 13/15, and with his last round victory Lasker tied Janowski for second place with 11/15. Condtion: Some edge wear else a very good copy.
