About this Item: Carol Paperbacks, New York, 1991. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Paperback Printing. 288 pp. Light edge and corner wear with a crease on the spine; no interior markings. This anthology contains: The Voice in the Night by William Hope Hodgson; The Festival by H. P. Lovecraft; The Travelling Grave by L. P. Hartley; The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood; Count Magnus by M. R. James; The Judge's House by Bram Stoker; Caterpillars by E. F. Benson; The Monkey's Paw by W. W. Jacobs; The Dancing Partner by Jerome K. Jerome; The Cone by H. G. Wells; The Inn by Guy de Maupassant; The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe; and Captain Murderer by Charles Dickens. Bram Stoker, born in Dublin in 1847, was part of the artistic community in London, the community that included Oscar Wilde, James McNeill Whistler, Arthur Conan Doyle and many others. Although he had never visited Eastern Europe, he had an Hungarian acquaintance named Armin Vambery who liked to spin dark and inspirational tales about the Carpathian Mountains. And, of course, he had read Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu and The Vampyr by John Polidori, the writer who is often credited with the creation of the vampire genre. Stoker's novel, Dracula, was a hit at the time. But he would have been surprised, and quite pleased, to learn that his creation had inspired so many future authors. Seller Inventory # 204948

About this Item: Royal Geographical Society, London, 1886. First Edition. 16 pages, plus a large fold-out colour map measuring 18 x 17.5 inches (46 x 44cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. A spectacular extra large colour map of Brazil accompanies a succinct and vivid early expedition account in which the author endeavors to correct previously erroneous maps, following his extensive surveys encompassing vast territory. The author traveled to Brazil in 1875 and was received by indigenous tribes with misapprehension and hostility, but perseverence and artful negotiation enabled him to amass valuable information in the several years spent in unknown regions. Wells remarks on barbaric slave trade in Rio Janeiro, 3000 Irish immigrants brought to Brazil under false pretenses of great opportunity but instead being forced to serve in the army, on the recent anti-slavery movement, economic devastation of some regions, and deadly racial conflicts. A most illuminating firsthand record of early mapping in South America, at a time of civil unrest and relentless quest for prosperity in the Americas. The full account was revealed later the same year, in Wells' book titled, "Exploring and Traveling Three Thousand Miles Through Brazil from Rio De Janeiro to Maranhao, with an Appendix Containing Statistics and Observations on Climate, Railways, Central Sugar Factories, .".
