Item Description: Amsterdam, J.D.Sybrandi 1861, 1861. . [X],370p. With lithograph frontispiece by G.J.Scheurleer and H.L. van Hoogstraten, depicting the 'procession of the Russian embassy to Nagasaki 1804'. Contemp. full red morocco, back and both sides richly gilt decorated, minor rubbing. A very fine copy. First (only) edition, rare. The first part of the book gives an account of the opening of Japan to the foreign nations: the arrival of the first Europeans in Japan, the relations with the Dutch, the early attempts to get access by the Russians, Americans, French and British, the armed expedition of the Americans under Commodore Perry resulting in the Treaty of Kanagawa of 1854, and the treaties between Japan and the other foreign nations. This is followed by a chapter on the treaty of 1856/7 between Japan and the Netherlands, including several relating documents. The author, an officer in the Dutch East Indian Army, then gives a short description of Japan and its history and ceremonies, its produce and industry, navigation and commerce with foreign nations, the problems connected with the compliance to the treatises and with currency transactions, and the growing resistance of the aristocratic party against the admission of foreign nations. *Cordier c.555.
