About this Item: Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, New York, 1981. Hardcover. Condition: Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Lebenstein, Jan (dust jacket art) (illustrator). First Printing, First Edition. The author, then at U-C Berkeley, won the 1980 Nobel Prize for Literature. This book was translated from the Polish language by Louis Iribarne, well-known and prize-winning translator and teacher of Russian and Polish at the University of Toronto. The story takes place in Lithuania, where village country life is a push-pull balance between Catholicism and pagan beliefs that somehow blend as the villagers seek to exorcise a woman's ghost, released after suicide. Thomas, the child-protagonist, experiences the Issa Valley as a too real synthesis of devils. demons, and kindly grandparents in this story with an old-world mixture of classic tale-telling and poetic nuance. The butterscotch brown boards have a dark brown quarter cloth over the spine, with elaborate gilted decorations and lettering. There's a bump on the lower front edge an inch or so from the spine, which is not noticeable under the mylar-covered dust jacket (with the original price on the inside front cover) that is glued to the inside front and rear covers. The usual ex-library assortment of rubber-stamped identifications, card sleeve, and dates appear throughout the front pages through the title page and on the rear free end paper. The interior pages, with occasional slight foxing, are unmarked, clean, free of tears, creases, and soils. 288 pages. Seller Inventory # 000711
