Item Description: JM Dent & Sons Ltd and EP Dutton & Co, London, 1933. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Maximilien Vox (illustrator). FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. Introduction by Emile Leguois [himself an author] - Illustrated by Maximilien Vox. - Maximilien Vox on Jane Austen : And by my treatment of the pictures I have tried to attune myself to an art which never stresses, records only the essential, draws rather than paints: an art which aims at grace and rhythm rather than at intensity of expression. Grey cloth with a blue decoration to the boards. Boards have darkened with age and handling. Tightly bound to the inner page block. General soiling. Decorative endpages. Old label to front endpage [signifies a school prize]. The story consists of 322 pages and apart from occasional foxing and browning, the pages are all clean and tightly bound. The story is accompanied by eight sepia line drawings enhanced with delicate pastel watercolours representing significant scenes from the novel chosen by the artist, as well as a few small black and white vingettes. By 1933, the Art Deco movement that had originated in Paris was in full swing, inspiring Monsieur Vox who resided in the Mecca of progressive art. You can see the Deco influence in his approach, with simplistic forms, characters expressionlessly gazing away from the viewer, and a stylistic choice of the pale pallet of sepia for the lines and pastels for the forms. - BONUS ITEM: FIRST DAY COVER - JANE AUSTEN - 1775 - 1975 - Produced 22 OCT 1975 - Stamps Depict: 8 1/2p - Emma & Mr Woodhouse & 10p - Catherine Morland - 11p - Mr Darcy & 13p - Mary and Henry Crawford.- Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it.
