Maroon leather cover with raised cords (6 of them). Heavy, plain boards. Measures 9 x 14.25 inches. First page is the title page, which has been repaired at the inner edge and tipped back into place. Large woodblock image on the title page. A few handwritten lines on the title page, with the dates 1589, 1593 and 1680 mentioned among them. One notation is "Ex Bibliotheca" with a library name that I can't make out. Rubberstamp on the title page and inside front endpaper that says "Bibliotheca Conventus SS. Salvatore Ord. Praed. Limerici." 10 page dedication with large Initial, header and image at the end, dated 1568. Pagination then begins with 1 and runs through 334 + 2 page index. Colophon "Lugduni, ex typographia Theobaldi Ancelin. D C LXXXV." Next page is the title page of the second volume, with the same large woodblock print. Dates 1586. 6 page dedication. Pages then numbered 1-583 + 10 page index. The rubberstamp mentioned before appears 5 or 6 more times in the book, on endpapers or title pages, also final page of index. Text in Latin, usually in 2 columns but also with some printed marginal notes, and single-column sections. Nice Initials throughout. Wide margins. The author was the first Bishop of Ghent. His close readings of the Psalms and the wisdom of Solomon, here with glosses and commentary, helped mark an important trend in the study of the sacred texts - treating them as we now treat great and complicated poetry, where the intentions of the author is plumbed and the language and verse are examined for nuance of meaning. Printed in London. Please email with questions or to request photos. Seller Inventory # R-222
