About this Item: Hasegawa Takejiro, Tokyo, Japan, 1903. Softcover. Condition: Good. Kobayashi Eitaku (illustrator). Second Edition. The first book (No. 1) in the Japanese Fairy Tale Series based on well-known Japanese folk tales & published by Hasegawa. Seeking to model the books on Japanese anthologies published in the sixteenth century he hired traditional Japanese woodblock printers like Kobyashi Eitaku, Suzuki Kason, and Chikanobu to illustrate them & also employed American Presbyterian missionary Rev. David Thomson as translator. Everyone in Japan knows the story of Momotaro, the boy born from a peach who goes on to defeat the marauding ogres known as oni. The oldest known written versions of Momotaro's adventures date back to the 17th century, but even then the tale almost certainly had a long history of passage through oral tradition. Publication date is conjectural based on T. Hasegawa residing at 38 Yotsuya Hommura between 1902 and 1911 that appears on verso of title page, but the colophon in Japanese indicates a publication date of August 17, Meiji 18 (1885). However, publisher's list of of series inside rear cover suggests 1903 as that is the publication date of last title listed. Nine double leaves of Japanese style (furkuro toji) crepe paper (chirimen-bon) in crepe covers all illustrated with delicate coloured woodcuts printed by hand from Japanese wooden blocks. & stab-stiched to spine held by silk threads. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. unpaginated (20). front cover a little soiled & spotted with some curling to edges; interiors & rear cover in clean & bright condition; light wear to spine ends. Illustrator: Kobayashi Eitaku. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 250 grams. Category: Children; Fairy Tales; Folk Tales; Japanese Tales; Japan; Myths, Legends & Folklore. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 4241. This book is very light, and may be shipped for less than the standard book cost quoted at this site. About this Item: Hasegawa Takejiro, Tokyo, Japan, 1886. Softcover. Condition: Good. Kobayashi Eitaku (illustrator). Second Edition. The fifth book (No. 5) in the Japanese Fairy Tale Series based on well-known Japanese folk tales & published by Hasegawa. Based on a Japanese folk tale Kachi Kachi Mountain tells the story of a man who caught a troublesome tanuki in his fields, and tied it to a tree to kill and cook it later. When the man left for town, the tanuki cried and begged the man's wife to free it. The wife freed the animal, only to have it turn on her and kill her. The tanuki then planned a foul trick. Using its shape-shifting abilities, the tanuki disguised itself as the wife and cooked a soup, using the dead woman's flesh. When the man came home, the tanuki served him the soup. After the meal, the tanuki reverted to its original appearance and revealed its treachery before running off and leaving the poor man in shock and grief. However, a friendly rabbit avenges his wife's death. Nine double leaves of Japanese style (furkuro toji) crepe paper (chirimen-bon) in crepe covers all illustrated with delicate coloured woodcuts printed by hand from Japanese wooden blocks. & stab-stiched to spine held by silk threads. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. unpaginated (20). front cover a little soiled & small brown stain that has penetrated to verso; covers with some curling to edges; interiors in clean & bright condition; light wear to spine ends. About this Item: 1885. [JAPANESE FAIRY TALE SERIES] Kobunsha. THE FIRST 13 VOLUMES OF THE JAPANESE FAIRY TALE SERIES. This set of the series was published by the Hasegawa family when they were known as Kobunsha, working from an address in Minami Saegicho, Tokyo, their first address. The series began in 1885, printed on plain, uncreped paper and hence a bit larger than the creped versions, approximately 18.1 x 12.3 cm. The very first issues of the first few volumes had romanized Japanese language titles and no series volume number. Later volumes from the series had romanized titles first, as do several of the volumes from this set: NEDZUMI NO YOME-IRI (#6), KOBUTORI (#7), YAMATO NO OROCHI (#9) - MOMOTARO, URASHIMA and KACHIKACHI YAMA seem to be quite early appearances as they do not have "englished" titles as in later printings. Indeed, the first volume MOMOTARO, without any indication of a series number, is very early, indeed. The first illustration in THE CUB'S TRIUMPH (#12) is of a norimono with a moveable flap that, when lifted, reveals the fox cub within. All of these are early printings from the 1880s and very difficult to assemble as a set as such. They all have a bit of cover and content wear and some edgewear, as well. The plain-paper back cover of #4 is edge chipped and has been laid down. The collection is housed in a custom clamshell box. Seller Inventory # 89622
