Doré (1832-1883), one of the most prolific illustrators of the 19th century, produced images for the Bible, Paradise Lost, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, The Divine Comedy, as well as works by Lord Byron and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Howard Mancing, in his book "Cervantes’ Don Quixote: A Reference Guide," asserts that "Doré's romantic vision of Don Quixote has become the most popular and most frequently reprinted (and imitated) set of illustrations; for many people, Doré's Quixote is Don Quixote." Contains over one-hundred full page plates and assorted smaller illustrations by Gustave Doré adorning this volume. The Delightful History of the Most Ingenious Knight in the adventures of Don Quixote, and his squire Sancho Panza, as Quixote carries on his quest for chivalry and romance. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra's tale of the deranged gentleman who turns knight-errant, tilts at windmills and battles with sheep in the service of the lady of his dreams, Dulcinea del Toboso, has fascinated generations of readers, and inspired other creative artists such as Flaubert, Picasso and Richard Strauss. The tall, thin knight and his short, fat squire, Sancho Panza, have found their way into the wider culture. Supposedly intended as a parody of the most popular escapist fiction of the day, the 'books of chivalry', this precursor of the modern novel broadened and deepened into a sophisticated, comic account of the contradictions of human nature. Cervantes' greatest work can be enjoyed on many levels, all suffused with a subtle irony that reaches out to encompass the reader. 786 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall. AN IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION OF THIS HIGHLY REGARDED AND EARLY ENGLISH TRANSLATION. BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED WITH FINE FULL-PAGE ENGRAVINGS THROUGHOUT. An appealing set of Cervantes' magnificent and romantic tale. Jarvis' is one of the best-known and earliest translations into English. Its presentation, from the point of view of the quality of the art of the book is splendid. Very finely executed full page engravings, engraved head and tail pieces, and engraved capitals make for a creation of the highest order. There is a fine ‘Life of Cervantes’ preceding the text translated from the original Spanish and with an especially handsome engraving of Cervantes. In addition, significant content was gained from researching the old histories and chronicles with which the Spaniards of the 16th century were familiar. Thus, many of the period poetical nuances have here been included in English for the first time. Bookseller Inventory # 21569
