About this Item: Roberts Brothers, Boston (Mass), 1886. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First American Edition. Original turquoise cloth, lettered and decorated in black, lettered in gilt on spine; brown-and-white patterned endpapers. Cloth nicked/chipped on spine tips, and darkened on front board and spine. Internally a clean tight copy, but due to binding only a fair copy. Inscription on blank before half-title reads B. I. from J. I. American Copy. A previous owner has noted (in pencil) that the dedicatee is Ingelow's brother. I cannot substantiate this, but he or she was presumably a relative bearing the same surname. John Jerome was the last of Ingelow's full-length prose works, part novel, part philosophical musing. Inscribed by Author(s). Book. Seller Inventory # 04012

About this Item: No publisher, no place, 1864. Unbound. Condition: Very good- condition. No edition. Four line quote from "Poems" signed and written entirely in the hand of poetess Jean Ingelow. It reads: "Far better in its place the lowliest bird; Should sing aright to God the lowliest song; Than that a seraph strayed should take the word; And sing his glory wrong. [signed] Jean Ingelow Nov. 29th 1864." Her work "Poems" was first published in 1863; this quotation was published as the last stanza of the section titled "Honors II." Paper measures 5+15/16" (width) x 3+3/4" (height). It was folded into thirds, and has minor creases. Bottom edge has two small tears and a small chip, not affecting any writing. However, an old tape repair at the bottom edge has stained the writing, affecting the date only. Suitable for framing. Signed by Author(s). Book. Seller Inventory # 005484
