Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. This is a very good hardcover copy in the original binding of brown marbled paper boards with an all-over green design. There is a large printed paper label with the title inset in an elaborately lithographed Gothic style frame. Tan paper covered spine of dark green cloth. The edges of the covers have a little wear. Inside there is an elaborately detailed title-page followed by 32 of 40 numbered plates. No evidence of plates being removed, as binding still very tight, but normally with 40 plates. All plates are black & white lithographs showing an amazing variety of typefaces and alphabets. Many are composed out of very imaginatively worked animals, plants, people or inventions forming the letters. A classic of this genre, here an incomplete copy with various faults, such as browning, tiny foxing, and 2 instances of later careful coloring of initials on different plates. Quite rare in the original binding. Large oblong folio, 11" high X 13 1/2" wide. Call or e-mail for digital photos. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

Unito a: MIDOLLE J. Galerie. Compositions executées a la plume. Strasbourg, s.a. (1835 ca.). Cfr. Bénézit e Bonacini.

  • Strassbourg, Simon Fils, 1834-36. 3 album litografici legati in 1 vol. in-f° oblungo (31 x 41), composti rispettivamente di: 38 tavv. in litografia (su 40); 39 tavv. in litografia (su 40); 38 tavv. in litografia (su 40). 25 e 40. Berlin Katalog, nn. 5165, 5164, 5167; Bonacini, nn. 1182, 1181, 1186. Ambedue non citano il ritratto del Midolle.

Strasbourg, Emile Simon fils, 1836 (combined issue)/ 1835. Oblong folio, 121 full-page lithographed plates (18 monochrome, the rest in two or more colours), comprising a general title, frontispiece portrait and three suites of plates. Instead of binding in the three series consecutively, the binder has intermixed the plates such that Plate 1 from each series is followed by Plate 2 from each series, and so on. Four plates are misnumbered. Early full sheep elaborately tooled in gilt, later rebacked, retaining most of the backstrip (lettered 'Album'); all edges gilt; watered silk endpapers; covers scuffed and marked; minor loss to the corner-tips of the boards; some tanning and scattered light foxing (as often); moderate to heavy tidemark to half a dozen plates; four plates creased; minimal restoration to the margins of one plate; a few other signs of age and use, but overall a presentable copy of a very attractive publication. A bravura effort of early colour lithography, comprising three suites of plates illustrating the different writing systems of the ancient and modern world, with particular attention to decorative iterations of the Latin alphabet. (40 plates); and (3) 'Galerie. Compositions avec écritures anciennes et modernes .' (39 plates, numbered 1-38 and 40, apparently as issued). The first two parts include alphabets, facsimiles and sample passages in different scripts, while the third series comprises more fanciful designs which incorporate illustrations, elaborate entrelacs and text. These include several plates bitterly recalling the former glories of Napoleon (one with a full length portrait), several relating to notable Frenchmen of the eighteenth century (including Voltaire, Rousseau, and Buffon), and others taking a religious theme. These striking plates put Simon fils at the forefront of the new process of chromolithography. He used 'four separate methods of added color, including transfer lithography, rainbow printing, dusting with gold, and inking à la poupée' ('Princeton University Library Chronicle', Volume 70, No. 1, Autumn 2008; page 160). The plates were issued coloured and in black, and the three parts were issued separately in wrappers. Jean Midolle was a calligrapher, writer and miniaturist. The frontispiece portrait indicates that he was born at Besançon in 1797. 'We then find him working as a writing-master at Belfort, where he ran a calligraphy school. His first publications were printed by Simon junior, and were commented on favourably by the trade journal "Le lithographe" in 1838. Between 1830 and 1837 Midolle worked intermittently as an artist, writer and designer in Geneva, where he also taught calligraphy. With an interest in the practice and history of calligraphy, Midolle scoured numerous collections in libraries, consulting a variety of manuscripts in Paris, Brussels, Ghent, Lyon, Strasbourg, Nantes, Rennes, Rome, Munich, Florence, Zurich, Geneva and Trèves, as well as religious texts in churches (gospels, missals and lapidary inscriptions) . The plates were the work of at least five people: Simon; Lemaître was then working for Simon having previously spent some time with Godefroy Engelmann in Mulhouse; Auguste Ehrhardt for some of the alphabet plates; Fasoli, who contributed plate 4 of the "Spécimen des écritures modernes"; and Midolle himself' (Dominique Lerch: 'The Simons, father and son, engravers and lithographic printers in Strasbourg (1802-1881): A high point in French lithography' published in 'Journal of the Printing Historical Society', New Series 26, Summer 2017). Provenance: the front free endpaper carries the ownership details of James M. Langley (1898); David A. Langley (1946) has inscribed the name Emma S. Sloper in large Midolle-inspired letters on an early blank.
