Boby; In Which They Traversed a Space of Forty-Five Miles in Two Hours and a Quarter, Inclusive of the Time Employed in Raising and Depressing the Machine in the Air. To Which are Added Four Certificates, Testifying the Truth of the Relation, and Signed by Several Respectable Characters. Translated from the French of M. Blanchard. London: C. Heydinger, 1784. First edition. Small folio (10 3/16 x 8 3/16 inches; 258 x 207 mm). viii, 17, [1. blank] pp. With frontispiece engraving of Blanchard's balloon. Early dark brown paper wrappers. Housed in a dark blue cloth folder by Sangorski & Sutcliffe for E.P. Dutton.Gilt lettering on outside of folder. Balloon-themed bookplate of previous owner William G. Gerhard on inside front of folder. Lacking half-title as called for in ESTC. Slight offsetting to the title-page from the frontispiece, and some light foxing to the final leaf. A very good copy. Jean Pierre Blanchard, a "French balloonist who, with the American physician John Jeffries, made the first aerial crossing of the English Channel. He was also the first to make balloon flights in England, North America, Germany, Belgium, and Poland. During the 1770s Blanchard worked on the design of heavier-than-air flying machines, notably one based upon a theory of rowing in the air currents with oars and tiller. Following the demonstrations of hot-air-balloon flying by the Montgolfier brothers in Annonay, France, in 1783, Blanchard took up ballooning." (Encyclopedia Britannica). ESTC T33609.
