Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book, published on 15 December 2005, marks sixty years since the entire population of Banaba (Ocean Island) were relocated from their homeland, which now lies within the territory of Kiribati, to Rabi Island in Fiji, thus freeing up Banaba for continued phosphate mining, which enriched the agricultural industry of other countries, principally New Zealand and Australia. One & a Half Pacific Islands is made up of the stories of the Banabans themselves ? memories of their ancestors, personal accounts of the often terrible events of the 20th century, and stories of their resurgent life on Rabi today. These stories have been gathered by Makin Corrie Tekenimatang and Jennifer Shennan and are accompanied by photographs by John Casey. In addition there are valuable historical accounts and photographs of early 20th-century Banaba. 'A moving and reflective experience that becomes even more intimate through the photograghs that accompany many of the essays, which literally allow the reader to gaze into the eyes of the storytellers.' -Mary E. Lawson Burke, The Contemporary Pacific 'A unique and engaging volume. Beautifully presented and with some wonderful photographs and illustrations, One and a Half Pacific Islands will be a valuable resource for scholars and a fascinating read for anyone interested in Pacific culture or history.' -David Capie, NZ International Review 'While the pain of relocation and the horror of some of the events that happened on Banaba are not shied away from, many of the stories presented here also narrate the formation of a double consciousness: how to think, remember and revisit Banaba at the same time as learning how to be Banaban elsewhere.' -Miranda Johnson, Journal of Pacific History Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 2013 the Royal New Zealand Ballet marks the company's sixtieth anniversary. This is a triumph for the vision of Poul Gnatt, who in 1953 established a dance company which undertook national touring. Follow the story of those sixty years, much of it in the words of the artistic directors, dancers and other key participants alongside memorable images. International tours to China, the USA, Europe, Australia and Fiji are covered, along with the many corners of New Zealand that the company has visited, and the work of training and rehearsing. An Appendix lists the complete repertoire of performed works. The 60th birthday of the Royal New Zealand Ballet is a triumph for the vision of Poul Gnatt who, in 1953, led a troupe of dancers travelling the length and breadth of the country. This book, with more than 50 contributors and more than 300 illustrations, is both a rich history and a vibrant celebration of that heroic story. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. Fine blue cloth hardcover with silver stamped titles. Facsimile transcription of an 18th century manuscript work. 8vo. x, 102 pp. Illus.; color plates; biblio. From review: "Kellom Tomlinson is justly celebrated for his beautifully illustrated treatise, The Art of Dancing (1735). He also published six dances for the Ball Room between 1715 and 1720. While apprenticed to Thomas Caverley, Tomlinson began writing a Work Book in 1708 and added to it over a number of years. The manuscript contains copies of existing publications including five dances from a French collection, and a dance by Caverley. The most significant section of the manuscript contains six dances composed by Tomlinson and performed at Lincolns Inn Fields Theater between 1716 and 1721-there are two solos for a woman, two solos for a man, and two dances for a man and a woman."
