About this Item: Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, MA, 2000. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. Endpaper Art by Tech-Graphics (illustrator). xv, 378, [2] pages. Illustrations. Endpaper illustrations. Appendices. Index, Signed by Lovell on t-p. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Previously published as Lost Moon. Contains a new Preface. James Arthur "Jim" Lovell Jr. (born March 25, 1928) is a former NASA astronaut and a retired captain in the United States Navy, most famous as the commander of the Apollo 13 mission, which suffered a critical failure en route to the Moon but was brought back safely to Earth by the efforts of the crew and mission control. Lovell was also the command module pilot of Apollo 8, the first Apollo mission to enter lunar orbit. He is a recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is one of only 24 people to have flown to the Moon, the first of only three people to fly to the Moon twice, and the only one to have flown there twice without making a landing. Lovell was also the first person to fly in space four times. In April 1970, during the glory days of the Apollo space program, NASA sent Navy Captain Jim Lovell and two other astronauts on America's fifth mission to the moon. Only fifty-five hours into the flight of Apollo 13, disaster struck: a mysterious explosion rocked the ship, and soon its oxygen and power began draining away. Written with all the color and drama of the best fiction, APOLLO 13 (previously published as Lost Moon) tells the full story of the moon shot that almost ended in catastrophe. Minutes after the explosion, the three astronauts are forced to abandon the main ship for the lunar module, a tiny craft designed to keep two men alive for just two days. As the hours tick away, the narrative shifts from the crippled spacecraft to Mission Control, from engineers searching desperately for a way to fix the ship to Lovell's wife and children praying for his safe return. The entire nation watches as one crisis after another is met and overcome. By the time the ship splashes down in the Pacific, we understand why the heroic effort to rescue Lovell and his crew is considered by many to be NASA's finest hour. Now, thirty years after the launch of the mission, Jim Lovell and coauthor Jeffrey Kluger add a new preface and never-before-seen photographs to Apollo 13. In their preface, they offer an incisive look at America's waxing and waning love affair with space exploration during the past three decades, culminating only recently when the Apollo 13 spacecraft itself, long consigned to an aviation museum outside Paris, was at last returned to its rightful home in the United States. As inspiring today as it was thirty years ago, the story of Apollo 13 is a timeless tribute to the enduring American spirit and sparkling individual heroism. Commemorative edition on the 30th Anniversary, second printing. Seller Inventory # 72853

About this Item: 1980. No Binding. Condition: Fine. TYPED LETTER personally signed "James Lovell" in blue ink. This letter in on Captain James A. Lovell letterhead, measures 7.0" X 10.0" and is dated May 21, 1980. Letter has normal mailing folds otherwise in fine condition. Letter reads, "Dear Mr. Hathaway: Thank you for your letter of MAy 14 concerning my appearance in Sarasota, Florida on October 30. I have checked my schedule, and that date is open so I believe I can accommodate your client. I can speak to the group on various subjects related to the space program. However, the one I find most acceptable is on the flight of Apollo 13 in which problems occurred; and we had to improvise and struggle to get back home. That talk is interesting and not too technical. It also has some motivational an inspirational aspects which are quite apropos for a marketing group. My usual honorarium is $2,000 plus expenses which would, naturally, be travel and lodging only. Please let me know if this is satisfactory, and I will schedule my time to be in Sarasota on October 30. Sincerely, (signed) James A. Lovell". Born on March 25, 1928, in Cleveland, Ohio, James A. Lovell Jr. was a test pilot before becoming a NASA astronaut. His early interest in rocket science took him to places literally out of this world. For a time, Lovell was the world?s most traveled astronaut and part of several historical firsts with his flights on Gemini 7, Gemini 12 and Apollo 8. On Apollo 13, Lovell and his crew turned an imminent catastrophe into a ?successful failure? as they brought home a damaged spaceship. Lovell retired from the space program in 1973 and has worked in the private sector. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 002779
