Item Description: Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York, 1949. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. Jo Mora (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. This 68-year-old book is in wonderful condition. You can take a look at the photographs. The covers are very clean. They show very little wear, just a little bit of rubbing at the spine ends and corners. The gilt lettering on the spine it is no doubt less bright than when it was first published, but it is not worn at all and still very legible. This book is also very solidly bound, absolutely no issues in that regard. The pages are also very clean. Scrolling through them, I saw only one speck-sized stain at the bottom edge of one page. They are also in excellent condition. I didn't see any creasing or dogeared corners. I did see one very tiny tear (with a scuff) off the edge of the 'Books by Jo Mora' page. The illustrations all appear to be in perfect condition. There are a good many of them, most full-page. Also, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. And there aren't any markings or attachments. This is NOT an ex-library book. The page edges, by the way, do not have any soiling or staining. That's not something you would expect with a 68-year-old book. 'Joseph Jacinto "Jo" Mora was a Uruguayan-born American cartoonist, illustrator and cowboy, who lived with the Hopi and wrote extensively about his experiences in California. He was an artist-historian, sculptor, painter, photographer, illustrator, muralist and author. He has been called the "Renaissance Man of the West". Mora died October 10, 1947, in Monterey, California. His last book, Californios, which was devoted to the life of the rancheros of Alta California, was published posthumously in New York City to great acclaim.'. Bookseller Inventory # 001308

Item Description: Novi Sad (Újvidék), Serbia: Testvériség-egység (Bratstvo-Jedinstvo/ Brotherhood and unity) ., 1953. Large 8°, 84 pp. with chromolithographed title page and 12 full page chromolithographed illustrations, [1] index page, original illustrated wrappers, linen spine (Very Good, wrappers slightly rubbed on corners). A decorative rare children’s book in Hungarian language, printed in Novi Sad, Serbia, in 1953: the year of Stalin’s death and of consequently re-establishing the relationships between Hungary and Yugoslavia. - The book was written by Ferenc Móra (1879-1934), a famous Hungarian author and museologist, and decorated with a series of 12 high quality illustrations by a Slovenian academic painter and illustrator Joze Ciuha (1924-2015), printed in an attractive mid-century design chromolithography. This edition was printed in Novi Sad, the capital of Vojvodina (North Serbia), which has a large percentage of Hungarian speaking inhabitants. The publishing house Bratstvo-Jedinstvo was publishing books in Hungarian language under a Hungarian translation of its name Testvériség-egység. The year 1953, when this book was printed, was important for relations between Yugoslavia and Hungary. In the time between 1948 and 1953, in the so called Informbiro period, Yugoslavia froze all the relations with the Communist countries, including with Hungary. Only after death of Stalin in March 1953 the countries started with slow and careful communication. Very rare, no known examples in the libraries. Bookseller Inventory # 65097

Item Description: Self Published, 1924. Hardbound about 10.75 inches tall by 7.75 inches wide 146, XIII pages. Dark blue endpapers. Description: This is an annual, for the year 1924, at the Citizens' Military Training Camp at Del Monte, California. Numerous individual portrait illustrations, group photos, some cartoon drawings, and six full page drawings by Jo Mora [Joseph Jacinto Mora (1876-1947)]. Mora was the art editor for this volume, and some of the cartoons are also his, as well as several smaller drawings. The editorial credit at the front spells his name wrong, giving it as Jo Moro. These training camps were programs that operated during the summer, offering military training to young men without requiring that they call-up for active duty. These camps grew out of the Plattsburg Movement, and twelve camps were held in 1916. This was missed by Jeff Dykes in 50 Great Western Illustrators. BINDING/CONDITION: navy blue cloth with gilt; the entire book is printed on lightly coated stock, yielding clear crisp text and illustrations, but you have to be careful with this sort of paper and don't touch with damp fingers. It looks as if a bit of moisture was trapped between two pages, resulting in a surface loss on each facing page over an area about the size of a fifty-cent piece; otherwise Very Good condition. Item Description: Military Training Camps Association of the United States, Chicago, IL, 1925. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. First Edition. 165, xviii pages. Volume III of this yearbook prepared for the Citizens' Military Training Camp, Ninth Corps Area, Camp Del Monte, California. The national network of CMTCs aimed to provide civilian men with one month of military training each summer to enhance America's readiness should another world war break out. The camps apparently did little toward that aim. This issue of the camp annual is particularly noteworthy for the participation of Joseph Jacinto (Jo) Mora, a noted California artist (born Uruguay). Mora probably served as the art director for the publication, contributing many full page drawings and spot illustrations. Even the drawings contributed by others seem to have the Mora style. First edition (first printing). A fine hardcover copy; no dust jacket, as issued. A particularly nice copy. Bookseller Inventory # 126061

Item Description: Hotel del Monte n.y., Monterey. Mora (1876-1947) was the cowboyest cowboy of them all -- though born in Uruguay, not the U.S.; painter, illustrator, muralist, cartoonist, sculptor, photographer, author, historian and more, this multi-talented Renaissance Man also lived with the Hopi and Navajo in Arizona for a time, photographing, drawing and writing about their lifestyle. Group of nine (out of 12) printed menus, each narrow small 4to (4 3/4" X 10"), heavy buff card stock, (4pp). Very good. Mild age toning, with the last more heavily age toned on upper half. Mora drew 12 dramatic pen-and-ink local history scenes in 1933-34 -- one for each month -- for this local institution. (Mora spent the last 27 years of his life in the Carmel and Pebble Beach area.) The inner left page of each menu contains "A Word About the Picture on the Front Page" and brief description of the artwork, while the right-hand side contains the menu of the month. Alphabetically by title (not chronologically by month), the scenes consist of: The Harbor of Refuge, Heritage of a Romantic Past, Mañana, Monterey Surrenders, The Month Was December, Old Spain Still Lives, The Reward of the Pathfinder, Trails the Caballeros Rode and Yankee vs. Caballero. A near-complete collection of this famed hotel-marketing artwork. Very scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 40682
