Item Description: Art in America & Perls Gallery, New York, 1964. Loose Plates in Portfolio. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. np (4pp), 1 b&w illustration + 16 b&w offset lithographic plates laid into a decorative cloth portfolio. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Calder's Circus" was the miniature installation of whimsical wire figures created by American artist Alexander Calder during the twenties and thirties. Co-published by Calder's longtime New York gallerist Klaus Perls and "Art in America" magazine in conjunction with a 1964 exhibition of vintage circus-related works on paper held at Perls Galleries, "16 Circus Drawings" reproduces sixteen drawings from 1931 and 1932 as offset lithographs in black ink on heavy cream-colored paper housed in a decorative cloth portfolio. An internally handsome, well-preserved example of the exceedingly uncommon 1964 trade edition - issued unsigned and unnumbered - into which a lovely copy of the Perls Galleries announcement additionally BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED "CA / dato 13 Oct 64" in blue ink by the artist for a member of the Perls staff at the opening has been laid in. The yellow portfolio interior is still bright with the three plastic clips designed to hold the plates in place complete and present, while the exterior cloth shows some wear, abrading, soiling, and traces of moisture. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Signed by the Artist. Artist Monograph. Bookseller Inventory # 025683

Item Description: Valldemossa, Mallorca: New Seizin Press / Libra Press, 1999, 1999. THE LAST TRULY GREAT ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: A BRILLIANT EXPOSITION OF JOAN MIRO'S WORK THAT REQUIRED SEVEN YEARS TO PRODUCE, WITH TWENTY PENCIL-SIGNED ORIGINAL PRINTS BY NILS BURWITZ. Twenty texts about Miro by leading Spanish and Catalan intellectuals and artists, including Camilo Jose Cela, Rafael Alberti, and Robert Graves (who spent much of his life living in Mallorca). The texts are in Spanish or Catalan (except for Graves' poem, which is in English), and all appear here in first edition. Each text is accompanied by a AN ORIGINAL COLOR FULL-PAGE HORS-TEXTE MIXED-MEDIA PRINT BY NILS BURWITZ, JUSTIFIED AND SIGNED IN PENCIL BY THE ARTIST. These twenty highly complex prints are mostly etchings, often with aquatint and embossing. They brilliantly illuminate various aspects of Miro's work--and unmistakably demonstrate Burwitz' artistic and technical virtuosity. EDITION LIMITED TO 125 COPIES, ALL PRINTED ON EXTREMELY FINE HANDMADE PAPER AND SIGNED BY THE ARTIST IN THE COLOPHON. Large folio. Loose as issued in the original solander case, covered with beautiful dyed fabric made in Mallorca. Ceramic plaque with the title mounted to the front cover. Housed in a cloth slipcase. FINE AND BRIGHT, WITH NO DEFECTS. Laid in is a prospectus and a copy of the explanatory booklet--one of 1,000 copies, also signed by Burwitz--that contains reproductions of all of the prints, portraits (by Burwitz, of course) of all of the authors, and translations of all of the texts into English and German (and into Spanish for the Catalan texts, and Catalan for the Spanish). A monumental and stunning work. Bookseller Inventory # 3631

Item Description: Paris: R.L.D. (L'Imprimerie Dutrou), 1985. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 4° (324x254mm) - Portfolio Illustrated by Mirò with 4 drypoints, one aquatint and an etching with aquatint printed in colours and signed by the artist. An extremely imaginative piece of book-making. Printed on beautiful Auvergne paper, this represents one of the rare cases where a great deal of care and imagination have clearly been lavished on the creation of the book, and it is not just a vehicle for Miró's illustrations, which certainly enhance it, but are not the only element by any means. One of 35 copies containing the signed and numbered print (etching with aquatint), which is not included in the regular edition of 90 copies. The colophon is signed by José-Miguel Ullán and stamp-signed by Miró who had died before the book was published. Original (blue) binding and slipcase. In Fine condition. Signed by Illustrator(s).
