Quarto. black silver lettered cloth spine over pattenred light boards, patterned endpapers. Illustrated with numerous colour and black and white plates. One of 350 copies. A wonderful book discussing the many books D'Ambrosio has designed, and often giving great detail to the "why" which is most interesting. He designed not just the outside of books but also the "inside" how the text flows on a page - at times mischievously. [BCC 216]. Bookseller Inventory # 23405

Item Description: Both are signed on the back: D'Ambrosio, and with this notation: P.8. on both, undated, ca. 1990's., 1990. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Flame, or tree-shaped, carved form with surface in yellow ink, measures: 5 in. x 4 1/4; the face-form, with flesh-pink inking, measures: 3 in. x 4 1/4 in. These carved forms were either used to print images for an illustrated book, or are samples of this type of printing device. They were sent as collector's samples to a book collector in Cleveland, Ohio in 1994, in a small envelope with D'Ambrosio's printed signature and Scottsdale, Arizona address, on the back of the envelope, the envelope has been slit across the top-edge, and contains some unrelated notes in blue ink on the outer surface, plus the original address in red ink (possibly by D'Ambrosio). The printing forms are in fine condition, the envelope is as described above. A very scarce type of collector's item; we have not been able to determine what book or other production these were used to illustrate, or if the P.8, refers to page eight or not. The forms are in a small, plastic bag with a small sliver-like sample of plastic (printing medium?) with embossed lettering. Sold as a set of two items, only. Inscribed by Illustrator(s). Joe D'Ambrosio was one of America's finest and most innovative printers and book designers. He was also a fine artist and a master at silk screening and serigraphs. This volume of story-graphics was produced completely by hand, type is set in 10pt. Century Schoolbook Bold using a flat bed printing press and sundry silk screen techniques. I would assume this book is from the artist personal collection, given to his good friends of many years. The book is bound in silver cloth, and consists of 44 leaves which are produced with art paper, tracing paper, newsprint, silver foil, gold foil, machine-copy paper, black construction paper and clear acetate. Item Description: Joe D'Ambrosio, Portage indiana Chicago Illinois, 1976. Hardcover. Book Condition: As New. Joe D'Ambrosio (illustrator). Limited Edition. Trapeze. THINK CIRCUS, is a tour-de-force by master artist, bookmaker and author, the late great Joe D'Ambrosio." I hoped to bridge the gap between the Fine Arts and the Book Arts". This has been masterfully done by using a wonderful eye for color and shapes with an engineering degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology. The artist shows off his printing ability by " using two extremely different type faces which work well together because they have different design functions on the same page. He shows his ingenious feats of engineering in the manner in which he bound the book. " The threads which hold the pages in place exit through the spine of the book and become the straining ropes for the circus tent serigraphed on the front cover. The treads had to be waxed so their 90-degree angles remained rigid in the travel from spine to front cover. Otherwise the book would sag when the book was opened and the tension is removed. Trapeze has 19 fabulous serigraphs each one a work of art on it's own. Most are printed using several colors, red, blue, green, brown yellow gold leaf and others. There are also several black, white and gray prints. This book is #23 of 50 and 7 artist proofs and has been set in 18pt Centaur and 24pt P.T. Barnum ( an idea of printer Elmore Mundell), and printed on Rives BFK hand made paper by the compulsive printer, Portage Indiana. The boards are covered in tent canvas amd the paste downs are of handmade paper. The slipcase is handmade paper over board and allows the book to slip in either way. There is one unique and wonderful print at the beginning of the book dedicated to two of the authors most ardent supporters on the celebration of their wedding. The book is signed by both D'Ambrosio and printer Elmore Mundell. For the discerning collector of Fine Art and Fine Bookmaking this very special item has it all. Signed by author, Illustrator. Item Description: Joe D'Ambrosio, Sherman Oaks California, 1993. Hardcover. Book Condition: As New. Joe D'Ambrosio (illustrator). Limited Edition. One of 25 Copies (#1). In a binding of cast paper and white Masonic Sheepskin in a specially fitted side-hinged box of black cloth over archival boards. Hand printed on a Vandercook #4 letterpress. Opening leaves with striking dovetailed bas-reliefs of Michelangelo's sculpture of David, text with a variety of decorations and illustrations. This is the latest as well as the most delightful of D' Ambrosio's (1934 -2009) inimitable bibliophilic masterworks. Produced and partly written by D. Ambrosio, the book is done on handmade paper by Madeleine Pestiaux and contains photographs by Wallace Rhodes. The cast paper cover represents the marble slab out of which Michelangelo's David will emerge, and with each succeeding turned leaf at the beginning of the book, the reader sees the rock transformed, from a roughly hewn image at first and finally into the finished statue. The way in which these opening leaves demonstrate Michelangelo's notion that a sculptor discovers or reveals or brings out a statue from its confinement within a slab is absolutely delightful. Like D'Ambrosio"s other works, this oblong folio is cleverly designed and reflects a great deal of work and imagination. The typographic display of the various texts is expressive in itself as well as quite pleasing, and there is a good deal of decoration ( embossing, serigraphs, paste ons) within the text. The book is of obvious interest for its innovative design and charm, but the text, which occupies almost 70 pages, is substantial as well. It is a pastiche that consists of a kind of modern love story which finds resonance in poetry, mostly by Michelangelo, but also by S' Ambrosio and David Michael Soloman. The story and poems are displayed on the page in such a way as to indicate their interconnection. The whole package deals with the profoundly important variates of life: love of various kinds, sexuality, the pressure of societal values, freedom, and death. A magnificent tour-de-force by one of the great book artists. Also enclosed is an ALS by Joe asking two of his most fervent supporters ( my mother and father) what they thought about various aspects of the book, pricing, displaying etc. Signed by illustrator. D'Ambrosio, Joe (illustrator). folio. book-in-a-box binding: black canvas rear board and spine, blue paper-covered front board, marbled paper box structure and front image. white cords. unpaginated. This is copy number seven. Colophon signed by the designer, printer & binder Joe D'Ambrosio. It was printed using 14pt. Della Robbia type on Rives BFK paper. Ingres marbled paper used for the box structure and endpapers. The front board creates a frame shaped like billowing sail. Behind it is French marbled paper with intersecting white cords used to suggest rigging ropes. (A Memoir of Book Design 1969-2000, page 106-107.) This book is made from the limited edition plates created in 1973. In 1922, Duncan Gleason (1881-1959) created a series of copper etchings for the etched book Windjammers. Although the publisher planned 325 copies, probably no more than 100 pulls were made from the plates. No other editions or states of these etchings other than the 1973 edition printed at Triad Graphics in a limited edition of 25 numbered impressions. There are no signed or unnumbered impressions other than 10 publishers' proofs which are so marked. The edition including the publishers' proofs was done on Murillo paper using brown ink. There are a total of 50 trial proofs of various etchings done in black or brown ink and are marked as such. Each etching is impressed with the blind stamp of the Gallery Easel (from the Certificate of the 1973 edition). Card from Lorson's Books & the certificate of the 1973 edition are laid-in. Case is somewhat faded on spine. book-in-a-box binding: black canvas rear board and spine, blue paper-covered front board, marbled paper box structure and front image. white cords.
