Item Description: At sea, 1836. Journal kept by Captain J.T. Baldwin Madras Artillery during a voyage to India in the year 1835 [&] Original verses written on visiting home after a few years absence; Original verses on visiting Newgate after seven years Transportation; Extracts from the Lady Flora Gazette of Saturday 26th September 1835 etc., autograph manuscript, together 186 pp., 6pp. An important rediscovery: this substantial journal, never before published in any form, provides a remarkable insight into life on board an India-bound vessel called the Lady Flora in 1835. It was written by Captain John Timins Baldwin, an officer in the Royal Artillery returning to his post in the subcontinent, and a literate and keen observer: "What scope," he justly observes at one point, "a voyage to India gives one for the study of character, and how impossible for an individual to conceal theirs from a close observer" (65).The journal was written privately for Baldwin's wife Barbara (née Campbell): she was from the influential Edinburgh family of that name, and was remaining in Scotland with their young children, but would later join him in India. In fact, she outlived him by some 45 years, and would no doubt have treasured this relic of his life and thoughts written while still a relatively young man. One of the most significant aspects of the journal is that it dates from an era when the close association between India and New South Wales was really being cemented, in which light it is fascinating to see Baldwin reverting to the subject of transportation. Far and away the most important, and a genuine contribution to the tradition of comic verse relating to transportation and New South Wales, is Baldwin's inclusion of his own unrecorded comic poem 'Original verses on revisiting Newgate after seven years Transportation' (168-171), which imagines the thoughts of a transportee to Van Diemens Land on his return to England. In the poem the narrator finds himself once more in Newgate, awaiting the ship which will take him back to "Botany Bay". It is a conspicuously rare example of a poem in which the narrator is delighted with his good luck at being sent out to Australia, rather than the more common examples in which narrators lament their fate. With an adroit comic turn it concludes:But still what Odds! The big wig's care,Thinking I wanted change of Air,Gave me of Hope once more a ray,And pack'd me off, to Botany Bay.Oh then it was a bitter pill,But since I've found they meant me wellAnd graceless it would seem and rude,Did I not show my gratitude. Then once more free, and left and right,I'll do them all, so blow me tight. The poem is also adorned with a nicely executed ink drawing of the prisoner languishing in prison, which shows that Baldwin was a useful artist. Although Baldwin describes the poem as a parody, it is important to note that it is not simply a random nor unstudied inclusion, because Baldwin had clearly given a deal of thought to the subject of transportation to New South Wales, based on what he had heard and discussed of the conviction of a friend and fellow officer of his in India, on "Dickinson". Given the date and the details provided by Baldwin, it can be shown that this must have been John Dickenson (usually spelt with an "e"), a Captain in the Artillery cashiered in late 1834. Dickenson was initially sent to Tasmania on the Resource (Captain Coombes), but then went on to Sydney on the Siren (Captain Munro), arriving 9 April 1835. Dickenson's life is neatly summarised in his convict indent, where he is noted as being a 40-year-old married man with one son who had been convicted of embezzlement (New South Wales, Convict Indents, 1788-1842). Dickenson had had a long career in India, having been made a "Lieutenant-Fireworker" in the Royal Artillery as early as July 1813, full Lieutenant in 1818, and Captain in 1824, long before his eventual court-martial. Baldwin's thoughts on the fate of his friend are revealed because of a remarkable coincidence: while al. Bookseller Inventory # 4504650

Item Description: Imprinted by Felix Kyngston,, London:, 1610. Quarto: Collation: A8, B2, C-Z8, Aa-Nn8, Oo8, Pp-Zz8, Aaa-Ddd8, Eee8, Fff-Kkk8, Lll6. Lacking the cancel Oo4, as often (The cancelland, with a dedication to Prince Henry, was removed upon the prince's death. It was removed and was to be replaced by a cancel bearing a dedication to the Earl of Nottingham but "evidently the substation was delayed for most copies occur without any dedication."-Pforzheimer.) Of Enormous Importance to Tudor Poetry & DramaThe Only Complete Edition This edition collects all three earlier parts of ?Mirrour for Magistrates? and adds ?A Winter Nights Vision? and ?Englands Eliza,? written by Richard Niccols. ?Shakespeare was familiar with it and used the story of Queen Cordelia for some points in 'King Lear.' This collection also contains the story of Locrine, which was used in the anonymous play of that name wrongly attributed to Shakespeare in the Third Folio."(Bartlett 277).The first attempt to print the ?Mirrour for Magistrates? was undertaken by John Wayland, who intended to print the text as a second volume to his edition of Lydgate?s reworking of Boccaccio?s ?Fall of Princes?(1554). The ?Mirrour? was, in fact, conceived of as a continuation of Lydgate?s ?Fall? and begins were Lydgate left off. The printing was halted for political reasons and only the title page for that intended edition was printed. The contents of all subsequent editions varied due to the influence of the nobility, editorial choices, and issues involving licenses, so that no edition is the same. The first part of the ?Mirrour? to appear in print was in fact what was to become known as the ?Third Part.? Consisting of 19 lives, covering primarily the War of the Roses, it was printed by Thomas Marshe in 1559 and exists in only 9 copies. Marshe next printed an expanded edition, with 8 additional lives, in 1563. Subsequently, other parts were written and printed, resulting in titles announcing ?The First Part? (written by John Higgins), the ?Second Part? (by Thomas Blenerhasset), and ?The Last Part? (i.e. the ?Third Part?) by William Baldwin, George Ferrers, and others. The first collected edition, which united the previously published ?First Part? and ?Last Part? (but omitted the ?Second Part?) with new material, appeared in 1587.The only complete edition of the ?Mirrour for Magistrates? (the one offered here) was printed by Felix Kyngston in 1610. The copyright to the previously published parts descended to Kyngston through his mother, Joan Orwin, from Thomas Marshe. The whole was edited by Richard Niccols (1584-1616), who wrote ?A Winter Nights Vision? and ?Englands Eliza? Ha also re-wrote the life of Richard III, and wrote several additional lives including that of King Arthur. According to Pforzheimer, this edition includes ?in addition to the new material- all of the material from the 1587 edition mentioned previously as well as ?The Second Part?, which had been omitted from that edition. The authors:William Baldwin and George Ferrers are credited with writing 19 of the lives that made up the first edition of 1559. Other contributors of note include Thomas Phaer (translator of Vergil?s ?Aeneid?), Thomas Chaloner, Thomas Churchyard, John Skelton, Thomas Heywood, and Thomas Sackville. The ?Mirrour? was enormously influential in the development of English philosophy and the conception of tragedy among the Elizabethan poets. Its influence on Shakespeare has already been noted. The poems of William Warner, Michael Drayton, and Richard Daniel also reflected its strong appeal. The tragic demises of famous men and women from English history were intended to cause those in power to ?reflect? on their own character and actions. Some of the most memorable parts include the fortunes of Edward IV?s notoriously wanton mistress Jane Shore (1445-1527), and Sackville?s celebrated poems ?Complaint of Henry Duke of Buckingham? and ?Induction?, which relates the poet?s journey to the underworld. Drayton?s ?Cromwell? was not only influenced by the ?. Bookseller Inventory # 3148D

Item Description: Adelphi Theatre London? Undated but some paper with watermarked dates and 1840, 1837. A total of 97pp., mostly 4to, with a further four slips. Around thirty separate parts, unbound. Written in at least two hands. In fair condition, with light signs of age and wear. Fifteen of the parts (mostly from the first act) carry the name of the actor or actress at the head: 'Mr Bland', 'Mr Jonas', 'Mr. Gray', 'Mr Howard', 'Miss Barratt', 'Mr Webster', 'Mrs Baker', 'Mr Bedford', 'Mr. Lynne', 'Mr F. Lloyd', 'Mr Hailes', 'Mrs Ridgway', 'Mr Ridgway', 'Mr Hailes', 'Mr. P. C'. Bulwer-Lytton's book was published in 1834, and was an enormous success. Buckstone's musical drama based on the book was performed at the Adelphi in December 1834; and an adaptation by Edward Fitzball at the Royal Victoria in 1835. Nicholas Daly, in 'The Demographic Imagination and the Nineteenth-Century City' (CUP, 2015), states that 'the manuscript of Buckstone's play is not in the Lord Chamberlain's collection in the British Library: either it was never licensed or the copy submitted for license was lost'. A number of the actors named were at the Adelphi at the time, and the watermarked dates on some of the paper may suggest that the material in this collection is related to a revival, possibly with a changed ending.
