SIGNED, with a brief dedication, by the author. Inscription dated 1951. Dedicated to a an apparent veteran of World War I. 128 pp. With black and white photos. An account and history of the Bonus March on Washington by veterans of World War I. These veterans, many in deep poverty and out of work due to the onset of the Great Depression, sought to have their bonus certificates redeemed. Various encounters with law enforcement led to the shooting and deaths of several veterans, with President Herbert Hoover ordering a forced eviction led by the army and Douglas MacArthur. This work recalls both the march and the eviction, and includes photos of the makeshift homes being burnt, etc. as well as tying in the veterans efforts to the concept of the New Deal. John Henry Bartlett was a governor of New Hampshire. GOOD jacket on a VERY GOOD book. Minor browning to the jacket, with light fading and scuffing. Minor soiling. Extremities scuffed and somewhat worn, with the head and tail of the jacket frayed and chipped. A few minor tears present along the upper rear extremity, with minor creasing. About this Item: Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1859. Cloth. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Second Edition. Fair/No Jacket. Green textured cloth with corners worn through. Spine taped over with green tape and typed labels. Front hinge gone. Text block tight and square. xxxii, 524 printed pages. Former owner, Rudlph Elie, a writer for the Boston Herald, signed on front pastedown. Another owner, E.H. Faucon, signed on title page. Edward Horatio Faucon was a sea captain from Milton, Mass. He was the "good" captain in Richard Henry Dana's "Two Years Before the Mast." The two met while they were harvesting hides on the California coast. Faucon later married Martha Weld, of the famous Boston Weld family, and enjoyed a long and prosperous career at sea, initially in the opium trade 1845-50, and later, as Captain of the ship Frolic, bringing Chinese goods to the lively market created by the California gold rush. On July 25, 1850, Frolic was wrecked on the California coast and Captain Faucon returned to Boston and a career in the marine salvage business for Boston insurance interests. During the Civil War he commanded Union Navy steamships, earning substantial 'prize' money for capturing rebel raiders. His autograph has been authenticated with an example in the Milton Historical Society's archives and can be provided for comparison. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. E. H. Faucon. Senator who supported the "Bonus March" of poor veterans, who camped in washington while requesting special funding from Congress. Forster was a very important non-political staff member at the White House. "Rudolph Forster was Executive Clerk and Administrative Officer in Charge of executive Papers at the White House until his death in 1943. He had piled up nearly fifty years of service to eight Presidents. His job was to remind the President that a bill, for example, must be acted upon in a certain amount of time, or that by law he must fill a vacancy within a definite period. He was also responsible for the 'orderly handling of documents' and supervision of the large clerical staff. He was the most important permanent official at the White House.
