About this Item: Printed by J. McCreery for H. R. Young, London, 1819. 432 x 286 mm. (17 x 11 1/4"). [51] leaves (lacking half-title leaf). Contemporary burgundy straight-grain morocco, covers with multiple borders intricately rolled in gilt and blind, gilt-decorated raised bands, spine panels elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt-rolled turn-ins, all edges gilt. Front joint and hinge and upper corners repaired with some (though not consummate) skill. WITH AN IMPRESSIVE FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF EDINBURGH. With engraved frontispiece, one tailpiece vignette and 48 plates etched by James Fittler from drawings by John Claude Nattes. Front pastedown with two bookplates of the important Pittsburgh insurance executive William McGill Duff (1878-1949) and a card inscribed to him from Edward A. Woods dated 22 Dec. 1925. Title signed and dated 1820 on upper margin by original owner, Hugh Booth. Avery Library, p. 339. Rear joint with five-inch crack at head (though the board still firmly attached), the binding with significant wear and soiling, variable (never severe) offsetting from images to text leaves, a few plates with light foxing to margins, other minor defects; obviously with condition issues, but the volume redeemed by its very unusual, well-preserved, and quite pleasing fore-edge painting. Even with its warts and freckles, this is a volume of particular appeal, first for its topographical content and especially for its memorably vast painting. The scene on the fore edge is a very skillfully painted view of Edinburgh looking south from Craigleith, the composition being especially remarkable because of the sweeping impression of the location that it communicates. This results, of course, because of the extraordinary width of the fore-edge space allotted to the artist: at 16 1/2 inches (430 mm.) from end to end, this is the broadest fore-edge painting we've ever seen. The painting also has considerable depth, with two herders and their cows in the right foreground, outcroppings of rock (for which Craigleith is famous) in the left foreground, and Edinburgh far in the distance, its commanding castle seeming to touch the sky many miles away. Given the colors used (copper orange in the trees, for example), the puffy treatment of the clouds, and the dabbing style with which the paint has been applied, this is almost certainly the work of the so-called "Dover Painter," who is described at length in the previous item. Our view is based upon Thomas H. Shepherd's drawing "Edinburgh from Craigleith," engraved by W. Tombleson, which originally appeared in John Britton's 1829 "Modern Athens." Initially published in 1804, Fittler's work is an illustrated celebration of Scotland's most interesting antiquities, castles, towns, and picturesque scenery, with scenes being drawn using a wide, impressionistic pen. Bryan notes that Fittler (1758-1835) "entered the schools of the Royal Academy in 1778, and was elected an Associate Engraver in 1800. He distinguished himself by numerous works after English and foreign masters, of different subjects and character; and book illustrations by him abound." Fore-edge paintings of this size and quality, however, do not. Given the colors used (. Seller Inventory # ST12685b

About this Item: London for W. Miller, 1810. First edition. folio (48.5 x 35 cm. approx.), [iv], 86 pp, including title page and list of plates. Forty fine hand-coloured aquatint plates, by Hill after Nattes (except for plate 29, by Cartwright after Nattes), plates on Whatman paper watermarked 1808, fine modern period style black straight-grained morocco richly gilt, first four leaves of text with neat restoration to fore-edge, 2 leaves with short tears repaired, an excellent example. An outstanding series of views of Versailles and Paris by one of the foremost drawing masters of his day. The work is characterized by many unusual subjects and interesting perspectives, and provides a fine record of Paris in the aftermath of the Revolution. It was produced in quite a small edition and has always been scarce and sought after. The Versailles plates form a beautiful set, not only of the park of Versailles, the Trianon, the famous machine at Marly, which pumped water for the fountains of Versailles, but also for the environs including St. Cloud. Many of the Parisian views show the influence of Piranesi in the choice of angles and also Nattes was taken with the bridges; 8 of the views are of bridges and a further 7 are scenes drawn from beneath them. John Claude Nattes (1765?-1839) was a topographical draughtsman and watercolour painter who travelled widely in England and France and a founder member of the Society of Painters in Watercolours. He trained as a pupil of Hugh Primrose Deane, the Irish landscape-painter. He evidently had a great affection for France in general and Paris in particular as at the end of 1822 he left England and almost certainly settled in France, where a number of collections of his drawings are located; his last known address was in St Germain. The main collections of his work are in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Guildhall Library, London; the print room at Windsor Castle; the Bodleian Library, Oxford; and the National Library of Scotland. "Some of the finest aquatint plates in existence are those done from the drawings of John Claude Nattes . The Views of Versailles, Paris, St Denis are well known as fine and attractive" (Prideaux, p. 274). Published during the time of the Napoleonic War, very few English people would have travelled in France at this time. This probably accounts for the small edition and scarcity of the work. Abbey, Travel, 103. Prideaux p. 346. Tooley 342 (text in French). Seller Inventory # 92937

The beautiful plates include iconic views of Bath from the Claverton Road, the Royal Crescent, the Pump Room, and Concert-Room dating from the time when Jane Austen was living there with her family (1802-1806). Jean-Claude Nattes was one of the most successful watercolour artists of his time. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1782 and 1814, and at the Old Watercolour Society, of which he was a founding member. However, in 1807, shortly after publication of this magnificent series of views of Bath, and at the height of his success, Nattes was excluded from the Society after accusations of exhibiting work of other artists under his own name. Abbey Scenery 41; Tooley 340. Catalogued by Kate Hunter. Seller Inventory # 002342

About this Item: London: William Miller; & Bristol: William Sheppard, 1806, 1806. Folio (451 x 321 mm). Skilfully rebound to style in green straight-grained half calf, red morocco label, spine gilt banded and with gilt geometrical roundels in compartments, marbled sides, Externally close to fine, light toning throughout, very occasional light spotting, marginal finger-soiling, minimal offset, last leaf a little stained in the upper margin, and with one or two short edge-splits, neat archival tissue repairs. A very good copy, with the half-title bound in. Plates and text watermarked 1801. 28 hand-coloured aquatint plates, similar vignette to the title page, near full-page illustration to the last leaf. First edition, a very good, complete copy - "The half-title is frequently missing. Some copies have the vignettes uncoloured" (Tooley). Abbey suggests that although no precedence can be proved "it is probable that the coloured vignettes were issued after the completion of the parts as an extra inducement to prospective purchasers. The comparative scarcity of the book would appear to argue for a limited circulation". Wonderful suite of plates of the sights and scenery, architecture and attractions, of the city: Royal Crescent, North and South Parades, the Pump Room, exterior and interior, and Robert Adam's Pulteney Bridge - probably at the very pinnacle of its popularity as a fashionable resort. The images are exactly contemporaneous with Jane Austen's residence there (her family lived at four different addresses in Bath between 1801 and 1806; for three years they were at Sydney Place, part of the development of Sir William Pultneney's Bathwick estates, planned and designed by Thomas Baldwin, the hotel, pleasure gardens and bridges shown in plates 14, 15, and 29) but she is an oddly ambivalent patron saint of the city. She wrote to her sister Cassandra of her feelings of "happy escape" when the family moved out to the suburb of Clifton, and in 1813 bemoaned that "Bath is still Bath". But Catherine Morland the heroine of Northanger Abbey, Austen's Bath novel, is made to exclaim; "Oh! Who can ever be tired of Bath?" It surely had its attractions for many. Born around 1765 Nattes is known as a topographical draughtsman, watercolourist, and drawing master. "Nattes had been a pupil of the Irish artist Hugh Primrose Dean. Joseph Farington recorded in his diary in 1787 that Nattes was a Frenchman and that he had been a servant of Dean's in Rome" (ODNB). He developed a reputation for topographical subjects, receiving a commission from Sir Joseph Banks to record the buildings of Lincolshire, for example. He exhibited widely, and in 1804 was one of the founder members of the Society of Painters in Water Colours. But, the event for which Nattes is most often remembered, "and which has undoubtedly coloured his reputation, was his expulsion in 1807 from the Old Watercolour Society for exhibiting other people's works as his own. Surprisingly, there does not appear to be any contemporary account of the incident and it does not seem to have affected his subsequent career." His work is seen by some modern critics as being somewhat limited in range, and "as one would expect from a drawing master" of variable quality, but his views were certainly popular at the time, and assuredly do provide "a vast source of material of great value to the researcher of pre-Victorian topography and social history." The present work certainly brings the bon ton Bath of the Regency to life. Uncommon, and highly attractive. Abbey, Scenery,41; Tooley 341. Seller Inventory # 63958
