In a measure, the history of British connection in the East Indian Islands is told in the story of this adventurous sailor, a pioneer of British commerce in Borneo, and his son, who may perhaps be identified with the author. The earlier chapters are chiefly devoted to the doings of Captain John Dillion Northwood, born in Battavia, and educated in Australia. Northwood was courageous and adventurous; he not only escape the perils of storms and pirates, but also amassed a large fortune, and became one of the merchant princes of Singapore. The greater part of the book, however, is devoted to a description of the manner in which this prosperity was modified by his son, John. The author describes the eventual downfall of Northwood and son, the death of the Captain, and the son's travels and adventures in Russia, Japan, and the Philippines.
