Item Description: Jacob Tonson, London, 1697. Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. Excerpt of Dryden's First Edition of the Aeneid. Comprising pages: 273-274, 419-420, 423-424, 425-426, 427-428. Large folio with full margins. The Dryden-Tonson "Works of Virgil "commenced in 1694 when Dryden signed a contract with Tonson to translate Virgilís entire oeuvre; Dryden was 63 years old and in severe political and financial decline at the time. The translation of the 13,000 lines of Latin verse was an important accomplishment for the author and tells us much about the understanding of Virgilís relevance to late 17th-century schools of thought. P. 427 with lower corner torn, otherwise good and clean pages (Size: 370 x 230mm). Bookseller Inventory # EPL70

It comprises 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas's wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed. The hero Aeneas was already known to Greco-Roman legend and myth, having been a character in the Iliad, composed in the 8th century BC. Virgil took the disconnected tales of Aeneas's wanderings, his vague association with the foundation of Rome and a personage of no fixed characteristics other than a scrupulous pietas, and fashioned this into a compelling founding myth or national epic that at once tied Rome to the legends of Troy, explained the Punic wars, glorified traditional Roman virtues and legitimized the Julio-Claudian dynasty as descendants of the founders, heroes and gods of Rome and Troy.Carlotta K. Petrina (1901-1997) was an American illustrator and printer. She was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1933 for her illustrations to accompany John Milton's Paradise Lost.Limited Editions Club Bibliography, 163. Bookseller Inventory # 03668
